We had some torrential rains on and off for several hours Sunday evening. The lights went off several times, and several downtown streets suffered flooding. Of course, the beaches in the bay are always lined with trash after every storm. Only the municipal administration of Amador Campos (2002-2005) even tried to tackle this problem. No one else. The bottom of the bay from one side to the other used to be visible most days, but not for over 25 years now. I can't help but pick up garbage whenever I'm on the beach, especially plastic crap. I wish I didn't feel so alone doing so. :-(

Rain continues in the local forecast for the next several days. It's been raining off-and-on since late afternoon this Monday. It certainly has helped bring the temperatures down.

There were hardly any visitors around this Monday. Extremely slow tourism-wise.

A real dream may come true for our region. La Comisión Nacional de Áreas Naturales Protegidas (Conanp) is trying to establish as an Área Natural Protegida a large marine region from Isla Ixtapa to Puerto Vicente Guerrero in order to protect and preserve the marine ecosystem. Fishermen will still be able to fish, but populations of species and where people like to visit will be carefully managed so as not the harm the marine ecosystem. I think this is terrific news! This could help remedy numerous problems that local governments irresponsably have left unattended, such as protecting sea turtle nesting sites including areas with restaurants at Isla Ixtapa, protecting coral formations, and establishing mooring areas for boats so as not to drag their anchors across the coral as too many continue doing.

Despite the rain, the waves continue decreasing in size, and the bay seems fairly calm. However, in spite of the recent news of our beaches being apt for swimming, the water testing was done after a long period of no rain. After the heavy rains we've been receiving since yesterday, I don't recommend swimming in the water. This from someone who grew up swimming in the Ohio River. There should be warning signs at our local beaches after heavy rains, but only one local mayor ever put some up once during his term over 11 years ago, and he was heavily criticized for it. Nothing since then. :-(

A good rule of thumb is to wait 3 days to swim in the ocean after a heavy rain.

A truly lovely and extremely comfortable colonial-style boutique hotel with a pool offering different sized rooms and suites, perfect for couples, all with air-conditioning, cable TV and wi-fi internet access. Conveniently located in a quiet neighborhood two blocks from La Madera Beach in the Darío Galeana neighborhood near the fire department. (click to enlarge photo)

Well....just like you I am one of those people that picks up beach trash whenever I'm walking. I can't help but notice people looking at the plastic and walking around it while I make a point of picking it up - can't ignore it.
