You have until August 15 before they start disconnecting phone numbers. Get'er done. It's simple and easy.

for me buying a cell phone on the street in Zihua close to 10 yrs ago, I could not identify the person who initially activated the sim card. So I was not able to use the on line method.

I was told by one of the salespersons in one of the small phone stores in Zihua to go to the main Telcel store in Ixtapa. All process took just a few minutes.

We were unable to do it ourselves on line after many tries over several weeks. Strolled into the nearest TelCel place that sold minutes and voila, 2 minutes later, and payment and/or tip refused.

I went to the main Telcel store in Ixtapa 3 times in April '26. However without the name of the woman who I bought the cell phone from in 2016 and with whom the sim card activated, I was SOL. On my third visit Telcel told me there was no choice but to give up my old number for a new one. This was after Telcel told me the woman's first name and that she lived near Acapulco where I have not been near since 2011. Telcel had but would not divulge the last name of the woman I bought the phone and sim card from in 2016. I could not have anticipated in 2016 that Mexico would require registration of all cell phones 10 yrs later.

Sorry to hear that you ran into a bureaucratic brick wall. Your experience is completely opposite of mine in the main Telcel store in Ixtapa. As I remember, I was not asked anything similar to what they demanded of you. I don't remember but I think it was in May that I registered my phone. Did you wind up giving up your old phone number? What a pain that would be!

As long as your phone number hasn't expired due to lack of payment, you will be fine.

Not true. This article explains all the details:

IF you aren't able to register your phone in time, just wait until you get here and do it. You shouldn't lose the number.
