HaZIHendo Alegría y Recuerdos
It rained sometime during the night. Not much, but enough that I had to sweep the water off our roof this Saturday morning. We awoke to a bright clear sky without a rain cloud in sight and refreshing morning temperatures. Slowly but surely visitors began to show up along the waterfront carrying all their gear for a day at Las Gatas. And this evening we saw hundreds of them returning, some sunburned, most smiling. They'll make their way back to their buses, cars, and in some cases their hotel rooms and be back home before Sunday evening all suntanned and relaxed.
The fishermen have been enjoying decent catches recently. If you're up early, get to the downtown waterfront before 7:30 in the morning and you'll get an eye full of their overnight bounty. You can buy fish directly from the fishermen if you like.
The ocean is pretty calm right now without any passing storms, and the tide is not as high as it'll be this coming weekend, but it still isn't reaching its normal low point. Surf remains decent in the mornings with the waves at just around a meter or so.
Whale-watching season doesn't start for another month and a half or so, but everything else on the water is still worth doing. Snorkeling at Manzanillo, fishing, or just sightseeing and enjoying watching the dolphins play in the bow wake of the boat are always excellent ways to enjoy one's time in Zihuatanejo.
Whether you want to go sportfishing, whale watching, sightseeing or snorkeling, my friend Capitán Ramón Olea of the panga Oleaje offers an affordable adventure waiting to be enjoyed. Ramón knows all the local fishing and snorkeling spots as well as what else is worth seeing. His 24' covered panga doesn't offer much luxury, but his expertise in fishing and his local knowledge of our coast and its marine life is second to none! Ramón practices "catch and release" fishing when possible. (click to enlarge image)
