Adiós a José Montufar Leónides - qepd

One of our favorite and beloved local musicians has passed away. José Montufar was part of Los Romanceros del Balsas, who quit performing in public a couple of months ago due to health problems. Lupita and I loved their music and their talent, and we cherished our frequent conversations with these lovely men who entertained Zihuatanejo's residents and visitors for decades and really set the standard of excellence among local wandering musicians. They will always remain our favorites and the musicians who best represented the true feeling of the original culture of Zihuatanejo.

Thank you for sharing this news, Rob. José was one of my favorites as well and I will always remember one night a few summers ago when we passed hours and hours listening to Los Romanceros while dining (and lingering) at El Mediterraneo on Paseo del Pescador. Los Romanceros were a true treasure, true musicians and true ambassadors for all that is beautiful here in Zihuatanejo.

So sad, but thanks for posting for us who would not have known.

I remember so fondly last year on my birthday hearing them. I had people up to my house to sample cake and for some reason (long story) they all left and I was home alone. I walked down to the paseo and the Romanceros were there. They knew it was my birthday and they played and sang for me for almost an hour. It was one of the finest gifts I could have ever received. I have already missed their music, but I will miss talking to Jose. They are both great men.

End of an era. Sadly músicos such as he are all disappearing. He will never be replaced but will always be remembered.

I thought I would add some of the videos I made of their songs. These videos were made at the behest of José and Odilón. I wanted to help promote them, but now these will serve as part of their legacy.

We loved seeing and hearing Los Romanceros while visiting el centro. May Jose rest in peace, our condolences to his family and friends.

I too will sorely miss this duo who clearly stood out against their competition amongst the other beach troubadours.

I'm very sorry. Very sorry, indeed. I remember him fondly. I hope that his passing was easy. My warmest regards to his family and we will miss him.

Both Ron and I are very sad to hear this as well. It seems like the passing of an era in Zihuatanejo. Their duets were one of our frequent delights for many years.

We, Ron and I, are saddened to hear this news. Both gentlemen always dropped what they were doing to embrace us, share stories and updates on family and health. Many times they sang special numbers for us. I had the privilege of having the brothers accompany me for a song "Fernando" (which they learned in 10 minutes!) performed for a music nite we had several years ago in our yard.The evenings on paseo de pescador will never be the same.
