Does Fonatur still plan to go ahead with this project ? I've heard that since vacancy rates are up, there is less interest in going forward with the Cruise dock. I personally hope this plan is dead in the water since it would negatively alter the way of life and charm of Barra de Potosi. I would appreciate any current info on this. ....JB

The best I understand at this time, Johnny is that Fonatur no longer has any concessions in the area. Hopefully they are gone for good. Of course that is my opinion and not endorsed by everyone, but I do not understand why not.

I know that Fonatur swings a lot of weight. I reckon the only thing that would deter them is a lack of projected revenues on the project. A few years ago, it almost seemed as though it was a done deal; now you don't hear much about it. I wish it were dead & gone too; but I have a feeling it's just on the back burner. ...JB

Dead in the water... for now.
Fonatur Operadora Portuaria SA de CV had their concesión cancelled. End of THAT story.
But the ex-mayor and now Diputado Federal Lic. Silvano Blanco Deaquino wants to build a cruise ship pier at Playa La Majahua between Zihuatanejo and Ixtapa, essentially reviving interest in the same parcel of land whose development was abandoned after discovering one of its investors was the disgraced brother of former Presidente Salinas. So it looks like there's some still some slimy interests around thinking of the millions of pesos to be made from such a project, a major temptation for folks with nothing better to do but invent obras públicas to skim from.

Cheers Rob - I'm not familiar with Playa La Majahua. Would the impact there be as devastating as it would be in La Barra ? .....JB

The impact of unnecessary human constructions that will eventually be abandoned is always devastating to the environment. Until you can call them "ruins" and charge tourists money to see them. We already have one monument to corruption.
You can find Playa La Majahua via the Google Map or Google Earth Tour on my Zihuatanejo-Ixtapa Maps page.
