Puerta del Sol

Over the years, we've walked right by this place on our way into town from La Ropa. We stopped for the first time last year, and had a great meal, but then forgot to mention it here. We ate there again last night. It was as good as I had remembered. A lot of their dishes are prepared tableside. A lot of the time, I find table side preparation to be a bit ostentatious, but somehow they manage to pull it off, without the "hoity-toity" airs that most places that do this seem to project. If you secretly yern for the days of having a "real" Caesar salad (you remember-actually made with a raw egg), this is the spot. All 4 of us had a great dinner.

We've had a couple of great experiences at PDS. Couple of years ago our waitress brought out her wedding photo album and shared it w/us. Almost like being a part of the family!

Reminds me of the first time we ate at La Gula. A gentleman at an adjoining table ordered some kind of a flambe dish, which the waiter prepared behind his back, so that the diner couldn't see what was happening.

We always visit Puerta del Sol each time we have visited. It IS amazing, fresh and delicious! They also have a good wine list and the staff treats you like family.

A good wine list? We were there a couple of weeks ago. When asked for the wine list the waiter brought us three bottles of wine to choose from! The choice was mediocre at best.

Food was good though.

Shame about the view. Used to be stunning. Fortunately last time we got a table along side the railing and were able to look between the buildings!

We we probably go back, though not this year.

Jorge is very proud of his food and nice service, rightfully so.
I shared a bottle of (crap) wine with him one night. It was about the time he realized what was to become of his view. I thought he was going to cry.
Instead he said he was going to blast his music at the residents.
Being the gentleman Jorge is I seriously doubt he ever has.

They are one place that has good food in spite of no longer having a good view. Would much rather have the good food and to heck with the view.

Its been two years since our last visit to Z....perhaps they have cut back on their wines?? Or perhaps I am remembering wrong, which is a distict possibility even at my youthful age. lol. I just remember Puerta del sol has the best ceasar salads and their pasta was delicious too. I remember a number of years back, before the new construction, when the view was so much better. Still love that place and the owner is so warm and friendly. I am spacing on his name (surprised?), but at one point he also had a breakfast place right downtown which was also our favortie. It closed after 1-2 years tho :(

I'm a wine drinker and I thought the choices were limited but perfectly adequate. I was surprised that their "upscale" pinot grigio was from California, but it was fine.

I didn't go there for fine wine. Just a decent bottle for the meal, which we got.

I cannot imagine how disappointed the owner must have been to see his spectacular view eliminated. It's a shame.
