You do realize the article is from last week before the federal government stepped in and halted the progress of the self-defense groups, don't you? For all that shooting they did there were very few casualties.

With all due respect, that's not news, it's a redneck rag for arguing idiots! I caught myself being sucked in because if there's anything I hate it's rednecks.
The autodefensas have returned thousands of acres of farmland to their owners from whom the criminals had stolen it. In many municipios the good folks are enjoying the lack of crime. They were doing an excellent job cleaning up the state until the federal government stepped in, shot a handful of innocent civilians, and lied about capturing two capos of the Caballeros Templarios. We're all trying to be extremely patient but armies are never good at police duties and the police in Michoacán, like the majority of its politicians and public servants, had all been under the thumb of the criminals enriched and empowered by the stupid War On Drugs, that failed policy that just won't go away.
If the government doesn't uphold their end of the bargain the self-defense forces have enough popular backing and manpower to finish the job they started. They are inspiring a nation and serving as a role model for other communities dominated too long by corruption and criminality. This is not cause for alarm but for optimism.
¡Viva México!
