I have both ATM cards Citibank[banamex]and BofA[Santander]
SO
Would I be better off taking money out of Santander and taking a 3% hit or going with my Citi and Banamex option? I do know the exchange is not usually as good with Banamex but would it be 3% less?

Unless you have to wait weeks to see what each transaction actually cost, try making a 1000 peso withdrawal from each.

I only use the Banamex on Calles Guererro/Ejido across from Tamales y Atoles Any so my experience is limited. I get extremely close to the official exchange rate & because of my account balance in my Wells Fargo account get the $5 basic fee waived with no currency exchange fees. ATM instructions are in English and if you go at the right time, no wait. I've never had a problem over 10 years. I have no complaints.

The BofA 3% adds up REALLY quickly! I'd use my other ATM card at Santander. Most cards are linked so you can use them anywhere, and the Santander charge is 31p per transaction no matter how much you get. They give a great rate.
So, the other question is how much is your bank going to charge you to use the card.

I have 0 bank charges at either bank because be the cards are affiliated. So it is just the fact that Santander will charge the 3%. It sounds like I will be better off at Banamex.

so Dave, is that fee charged on Spanish to English or on Ingles to Espanol? Or maybe both?

Bank of America is charging this on all of "their" Atm cards for worldwide use.......International Exchange Fee......

Checked with my Credit Union this week and their card has no fees other than what the swiping ATM charges. So it is worth checking with your CU and getting a card with them prior to traveling!!!

You are so right! Then all you have to pay is the fee from the bank you are at. This is limited to 40p per withdrawal in Mexico.
Had the same question so last week I withdrew 6000 pesos from both of these banks with my Credit Union ATM card. Both withdrawals within 15 minutes of each other. Final final after all ATM fees was 47 US cents difference ... Banamex won. I like Santander because their ATM tells you what size money it will dispense: 50, 100, 200, 500. If it says it has 50's I typically get quite a bunch of them.

We always used Santander to avoid ATM fees until my bank, BOA, slapped on the 3% foreign transaction fee in November. That's 3% on the USD conversion, or about a $12 hit on 5,000 pesos. I just opened an online checking account with Charles Schwab. There's no minimum balance and they rebate every ATM or transaction fee at the end of the month. It was easy to do since I have an existing account, but even if you don't have a Schwab account it is not a big deal to set it up. We'll have the new ATM card next week for the upcoming trip. BOA can shove its 3% extortion racket!
