A couple of years back, my daughter and a friend got mugged in Managua, which you pretty much have to hit if you are flying in. They thought they were doing the right thing by taking a taxi at night but as it turned out, the taxi driver was part of the program. Picked up another guy that held the girls up and then they were dropped off in a highly undesirable part of town. Could have been worse, to say the least, but a downright nasty way to spend your first evening in town. She has traveled a lot (six months in Madrid, six months in Quito, weeks in Peru, Nic, Guatemala, the DR and Mexico). She speaks perfect Spanish (OB/GYN who spends much time doing clinic duty, mainly helping the Latino community of Denver). While she was able to calm herself and her friend to the point that they could enjoy the rest of their stay, I don't believe she would return to Nic again... she certainly would minimize her time in the capitol.
