Top mexican food restaurant recommendations
Hey all
Just arrived in town today and starting to look for good restaurants.
I know there is a pretty comprehensive guide here, but there is no way I'm going to get through them all :D
Hence I was wondering what peoples top picks are for restaurants that do really good Mexican food!
Cheers!

La Papa Loca: for a real Mexican feed.
El Manglar: Best calamari. Other Mexican and not so Mexican dishes, many with a European influence. This is our favourite all round restaurant in Zihua but the do close for part of the summer. 755 554 3752 I think.

So many! but on La Ropa--Rossy's, Paty's ( great avacado, shrimp salad). El Mangler, Doña Prudencia great breakfast dishes. On La Ropa, we eat most of our meals barefoot, with our feet in the sand-so nice!
Madera beach--Perla Negra, wonderful fish fillet $10, actually our fav place. Margaritas are made with Controu, Casa Viejo, only open for dinner, next door Margaritas for breakfast.
Down town: Tamale Annie's, Mediteranian , Daniels
But actually, I don't think I've had a bad meal anywhere.

Our favourites are Coco Bahia Botanas y Tapas (walk over the bridge by the port), turn left and walk up the hill with sea to your left)- well worth the walk. Also good are Rufo´s Grill on Calle Adelita and El Agave on Nicolas Bravo, no 49.

Reasonably priced in town: Tamales y Atoles Any & Monkey's place. For lunch we like El Manglar where you can often see crocodiles cruising past and for a pricier meal: Amuleto on the hill above La Ropa; incredible view.

Lots of good recommendations. There are so many options for great local, fresh food. If you want something a little different, I'd say try Doña Prudencia. They offer a selection of well prepared representative regional dishes that are different and interesting. Reasonable prices.

Here are four restaurants we must go to during our 1 week stay.
El Manglar on La Ropa Beach
Chuleto’s in downtown Zihuatanejo
Rossy’s on La Ropa Beach
Kau Kan – More expensive but worth it

None of these are open this time of year, strictly Gringo season.
But, downtown Chuleto is open and always delicious and El Mediteraneo by the church on Cinco de Mayo.

I believe "Monkey House" is no more. Another place has opened there.

This time of year it is a lot different than "high season". Don Memo's, La Portencia, La Papa Loca, El Mirador are all open this time of year. All have their ideas of Mexican Food. I eat at them all.
Los Braseros
If you are looking for MEXICAN food I would recommend Los Braseros and Tamale Anys both on Calle Ejido. Chuleto, and El Med are Mexican food restaurants. Bandido's also is open year-round and serves Mexican style dishes. They are across from the church on Cinco de Mayo.
Banana's on Nicolas Bravo, Dona Licha, and La Tertula for breakfast, lunch

Monkey house is now Flower House, and Daniel's has been closed for months now.
Correction
Chuleto and El Med are not Mexican food restaurants.

Way too many good restaurants to have a top 10. Los Braseros sure comes to mind (plus it is just down the street from a great tequila shop. If you go, don't have the fish tacos until near the end of the trip or you may find yourself going there too often and missing out on other meals. I could sure use a fix of those tacos.

In my first response, for Mexican food, I should have added Los Braseros and La Tertulia (La Tertulia only open for breakfast and lunch) Margaritas is also excellent with a lovely ambiance dining around the courtyard.

I agree with Anny's for good size portions- we love her chille rellenos that we split for lunch when we order Mexican Sauce and guacamole. Our very favorite is El Arrayan on Calle Adelita. At night he grills out on the side of the street and during the busy time you may have to wait for a table. We love to go there for breakfast and sit at a table between the stairs coming down from the bridge crossing the canal- we just love sitting there and watch the street traffic after we eat drinking end less cups ofcoffee. There are a lot of little places between Villa Mercedes walking toward the bay- the street has really become popular again since the street was repaired.

Once again, pretty much all of the restaurants on Calle Adelita are closed for the season now.

Paty's marimar is closed until October 10th.
Carmelitas in centro is top rated on Trip Advisor for traditional Mexican food but is only open for breakfast and lunch 8:30 - 4:30. Check the specials on the blackboard.

What about Chendo's? Are they open now?
Chendo's
They haven't been open when I've walked by recently. The only place I've seen open was the new restaurant where Mi Chyito (sp?) was...and of course Ruben's.
Chendo's
Thanks. Mi Chayito has moved over on La Ropa and that is in general. When driving and you make the curve going down to the beach for Rossy's they are right there on the corner. I forget the name of the hotel they are in.

Go out to La Barra de Potosi and spend the day eating at La Condessa. You may be the only gringo's there this time of year but you will get real Mexican seafood there fresh from the ocean. If you have a car, any little place in La Barra in the evening serves fantastic "real" Mexican food as the locals all eat there.
In town, we like Papa Loca and Los Braseros. We like El Mangalar for a nice lunch along La Ropa but we usually order seafood. We like many hole in the wall places. If you see lots of locals at lunch in the mercado, give it a try.

Any idea what happened to Monkey? Always a great host, wherever he worked.

I've been wondering the same thing. I sent a message to a friend of his to see if they have talked to him. If I hear anything, I'll post it. Kim
Mi Chayito?

Hotel Real de La Palma?
Mi Chayito?
Thanks. I needed that.

Margarita's has a lovely ambiance, but no actual dining. Open for breakfast and lunch only.

I also love the avocado shrimp salad at Paty's on La Ropa. Unfortunately, they are closed. Not sure for how long, but likely until October. Bandido's does some good Mexican style dishes. Los Braseros is 100% real Mexican food, and popular with locals so you are pretty much assured that everything is fresh.

Rufo's is currently closed, but has opened on September 15 (Dia de Independencia) for the past few years.
