Hi all, been reading the forum for a few years now and thought it was time to join in. We have been to Zihua 8 times since 2002 and are coming down again in Jan. We love it and some friends of ours are coming down also for the first time and we have told them that it is safe, no problem. But they got this email to them saying that the state of Guerero and Zihua and the area around it is no longer safe and to stay in the tourist areas only. Have not seen any big issue on the board so I take it is just another rumor or just another US state department warning going over board. It would be nice to be able to show them some feed back from some locals on your page so as to come there minds. Thanks.

I would read the thread by jaz. I will be driving my 80 year old in-laws to the airport in about 2 weeks. They have been going every year for nearly 20 years and won't be back until April. They sold their Maui condo after about 3 years into going to Z. These are very well travelled people. They can hardly wait to get back to Zihuatanejo.

There is crime everywhere, including Zihua. That being said, a few basic rules will tend to keep you out of trouble just about anywhere you go:
Don't stumble around drunk at night, don't wear flashy jewelry, stay in the touristy parts of town after dark, get your cash at ATMs during daylight hours and be friendly and courteous to the locals. No guarantees, of course, but this has worked well for me over many years of travel.

The State department warnings are the USAs way of putting pressure on Mexico to step up the drug war. When they busted El Chapo the US lifted the travel warning for Sinaloa.

and um yeah. been down there for over 10 years now. never had any problems. most self aware people won't.

Thanks for the info. read the Jaz report and we feel the same way. I have never had any problem in Zihua myself.

Is this a new warning? It seems to me that there has been a State Department warning for Guerrero for years now. Not to minimize the warning and not to repeat the list of usual cautions for the traveler (anywhere), but in the absence of specific new incidents against visitors as visitors or some information that visitors are now particular targets of organized actions, I, personally, am not altering my plans.
