A Californian named Dennis Doyle has taken over the old El Candela spot near Jungle Pizza on La Ropa road. Dennis had a catering business for 25 years in San Diego and had all his kitchen set-up shipped down from there. Until more folks arrive he's open Friday-Sunday for dinners only.

We both made dinner from the appetizer menu with fish tacos. He does them "Baja" style meaning the fish is battered and fried but the corn tortilla is warmed and not fried like so many places here. With the fish is cilantro, onion and tomato + any salsa of course. As far as I know after three years of research, only Los Braseros in El Centro and Manzanillo Bay Inn at Tronconies does fish tacos Baja style-

You can't tell by the photo but he uses a much smaller sized tortilla than standard size so I could easily put down 5 (@$18/each). They are killer good and I hope he takes them off the appetizer list and serves them three at a time in regular tortillas. I could have gobbled up several more if it weren't for the two "on-the-house" surprises- a shrimp treat....

and a tasty little salad-

He developed a 'taco jig' for fast assembly so food was quick, and his two waiters are VERY attentive so table service is about the best I've ever seen it.
And nothing fancy here- it's a "no frills" kind of a place as you can see-

Dennis has about every brand of Mexican beer there is and thankfully NO Bud that seems to be creeping into some places + plus a full bar-

He says his plan is to try different things to see what hits. He said Wednesday Night Poker will start soon.

Great review -thanks!
Those tacos look great.
It's good to know there will be another place
to get real baja-style fish tacos when we're down in March.
And I second Labrat's jonesing for those shrimp thingies!
Fish Taco Baja Style
Another place that offers Fish Taco Baja style is the Mexicanna Restaurant across the road from the House of the Mermaid resort in Troncones. They are to die for!
Fish Taco Baja Style
El Gringo Gordo- on the La Ropa road next to La Bocana...near Jungle Pizza, but on the other side of the street.

Fish Taco Baja Style
Please stop posting this kind of thing. I'm getting very tempted to abandon my dear wife and our sick dog and coming down anyway.

I'm sure it is a crime to abandon a sick dog--a dear wife not so much!
Fish Taco Baja Style
Well I sure don't want Trecker abandoned, but wife would stay with him! Sorry Gill, just an attempt at humour.

Remember, Tia started her life here in Mexico.
We miss you four already.
Fish Taco Baja Style
Yes she sure did. I adore Tia. My grandson was so taken with her and her story, that when he was given a school assignment to write about "how to change the world", he suggested that more people should adopt an abused animal and provide it with a loving home. How neat is that?
Anyway, it isn't Tia that is sick- it's Trecker.
