Whoa! THAT looks friggin' c-c-c-cold!
Just had to put on the old daily tropical wear one last time, eh?
And this morning we had another one of those brief flash colorful skies with the deep reds, oranges and yellows painted by wispy clouds against the dark blue and purple background of pre-sunrise. Only lasted about 5 minutes and I missed it 'cause it was car washing morning for me. You'd've loved it!

Well, OK, I live in the other most beautiful place in the world. This is my tiny mountain town
wardc_130506_9490-6_33.2x12.5 inches_34.3x12.9 inches 360dpi by wardacameron, on Flickr
It is on the outskirts of Banff National Park, Canada's version of Yosemite. It's mind boggling beautiful and...blah blah blah. I love it but I would really love to find a way to enjoy our fantasmagoric summers with Zihua winters.
If you'd really want to see the more images from the Canadian Rockies then check out (and like) the link at the bottom of this message. As a teaser, I spent the month of October photographing the moose rut. While normally solitary animals I have one image - the moosapalooza with 4 moose in a single frame. Another has my rear view mirror totally filled with a cow moose that took an interest in me.
Another day I photographed two grizzlies jaw to jaw.
C'mon, it's like visual crack for the soul.

Thanks JoAnna and Kim. I have to admit, I took this photo, believe it or not, on Sept 8. It was the day I confirmed our accommodation in Zihua. Jules sent me a text to ask how the weather was in Canmore and I wanted her to know both the weather and that we were all booked up.
Little did I know that this freak storm would turn into one of Calgary's biggest weather disasters since the flood of 2013 (the biggest natural disaster in Canadian History). Because the leaves were still on the trees, the branches held far more snow than normal. In Calgary some 80% of trees suffered significant damage.
My good friends had both their cars crushed under fallen trees. One of them got a rental from his insurance a few days later and another tree fell on that. It took weeks for all the storm weakened branches to fall and it may be years before we know the real impact of the storm/
Here's the story: Calgary snow: Tree cleanup prompts plea for disaster assistance
I've never been so happy to be booked to a warmer climate.
After the late arrival tonight, I woke up to -30C to go to work. My God, I am not ready for this.
Can I come back to Zihua now?

That's all so crazy!

Yah. I had no idea when I took this photo. I did go out and try to knock the snow of the trees but Calgary was hit soooooo much worse than we were. If anyone's wondering, we get way better weather than Calgary. The whole idea that the mountains are colder than the prairies just doesn't apply here.

We got our first real measurable snowfall yesterday and last night so I understand you arriving to that amount of snow.
I looked at some of your moose and mountain scene photos. What a talent.
Zihua will be ready when you are able to arrive.

Thanks so much. Where is your base of Zihua dreams?

Thanks for all of the great pics of Zihua, Ward.
I love the one you just posted of Canmore, too.
I have visited the area on ski trips -Norquay, Sunshine, Lake Louise, Panorama (BC),
but I've never been there in summer.
I've heard that there are some groups that do treks around Mt. Assiniboine.
Do you know anything about these?

When we are not in Zihua we are in Peters Creek, Alaska. North of Anchorage by 25 miles.

You're missing Z??? This is the first winter we have been at home is thirteen years! Thank God we've got lots of firewood. Yesterday the hummingbird feeders froze! Yes, our Anna hummingbirds over winter here. Freezing temps or not: http://www.wildbirdshop.com/Birding/Annas_hummers.html

Oh my! Really enjoyed all your Zihua photos! Thanks!

Ah, so we both live in beautiful, mountainous but cold landscapes. Thanks for your comments on the moose images. This was my first time photographing the rut. I spend most of October heading out each morning to a great spot where the moose congregate during the rut.

I don't do multi-day guided trips but I am a hiking and nature guide in the area so if you want to do day hikes, I can definitely hook you up.

Poor hummingbirds. Any hummers here would have frozen to death long ago.

Ward,
Be careful. If you sit in the snow too long, you could get a bad case of polaroids!!
Polaroids
But at least they will "develop" in a minute.
