Clinica Maciel

I remember a couple of years ago someone posted a "survey" they had done on the various medical facilities and I believe said that Clinica Maciel was expensive. Just thought I would share my experience earlier this week.

I had abdominal pain that kept me from sleeping all night and it kept getting sharper on the lower right so in the morning I knew I had to rule out the old appendix (It is fine). Had a complete checkup with Dr Maciel, an abdominal xray (they have new digital setup with computer), the lab across the street came and drew blood and I paid 800 pesos for it all!! ($57USD) Doctor Maciel arranged for a gastroenterologist to meet me there later in the day and his visit and a big pile of gastro meds at the farmacia were another 800 pesos.

The facility was clean and professional but personable. I was pleased with the experience.

Our only Clinica Maciel-related story occurred during some unusual weather in February, 8 or 9 years ago, when we had 36 straight hours of rain. Mrs. HolyMole had severe abdominal and back pain that kept getting worse. Since she wasn't in any shape to leave our room, we arranged for a home visit from our host's wife's father, a doctor affiliated with Clinica Maciel. With just four or five pokes of his finger, he diagnosed a kidney infection and prescribed a heavy dose of (I think), Cipro. He charged us 1100 pesos for the visit, which, at the exchange rate at the time, was about $130 Canadian. The pain was so bad that Mrs. H. would probably have given her left arm for relief.
