Getting to Las Gatas
Hi Everyone!
What is the best way to get to Las Gatas beach? I've read on Rob's description of Las Gatas that you either take the water taxi from the pier for 40 pesos per person, or can walk from La Ropa along a rocky path.
Just wondering what would be the recommended way. Is the path long/steep?
Thanks!

Walk---The path is pretty easy. You do have to climb over a couple of small rocky outcrops and should wear sturdy shoes. My wife and I are in our mid sixties and its not a problem for us. There are a couple of areas that can get slippery. It would be a challenge f you are mobility challenged at all.

Water taxi for sure! The boat ride across the bay for 40 pesos round trip is wonderful and a big bang for the buck. I still enjoy all the new vistas each time.

I agree with you, Tess. Water Taxi for sure!
The panga ride is a great opportunity for picture/video taking.
A couple of observations. It's nice to have a coin handy for the helpers at the dock as you disembark. "Tip"
I try to go during the week as Saturday and Sunday can get a bit crowded.
It's my favorite place to hang for the day. Going back tomorrow.
SUP/Kayak
We like to paddle over, and meet family who boat over, and walk back.

It really depends on a number of factors: age, physical condition, location of your accommodations vis a vis Las Gatas and degree of stinginess. The fellow who turned me on to Zihua is a notorious pennypincher and always walks there from where he stays on La Madera. Our place is right next door to where he stays and I've been accused of having miserly tendencies, but I would never consider the long hike. The 10 minute walk to the pier and the water taxi ride across the bay is just fine with us.

If you like sailing you can get the Hobie Cat operators in front of Paty's, Club IntraWest or Viceroy to drop you at Las Gattas for lunch and pick you up again later.

So is that you SUPing in the photo I posted in my message "Seaside in Z" yesterday?
We wish....
Because of dog conditions, at sunrise, we are finishing up our walks and swimming with our dogs. We usually make it out on our boards about 8 for an hour and a half or so. We are fairly easy to spot-two of us, and our boards have yellow edges.
Wish it had been us!!

I heard the water taxi union put a halt on the hobbie cats taking people to las gatas from la ropa. Better check first.
Cheers!
Hobie Cats
I thought it was a prohibition of Hobie Cats from/on La Madera and Las Gatas. We still have them on La Ropa.
Getting to Las Gatas
We have done both, many times. Since we live close to the pier we almost go by water taxi these days. If we lived on the far end of La Ropa possibly we would walk over the rock/path sometimes.
I think a boat ride across the bay of a morning is always a good thing.
Getting to Las Gatas
We have always found a boat ride at the stand that sells beach stuff beside Rossy's . It is not someone from the stand , but there are always boats anchored a little ways out. Same price as going to the pier and tell them the time you would like to be picked up. Very convenient if you are at that end of La Ropa. I would always ask for a life jacket for our daughter and. our guy would bring one out. I love Mexico..... I know I have his name and his boats name in a journal.
Getting to Las Gatas
I always recommend that little shack for a quick ride over from La Ropa. His name is Chuey. However, as one poster above mentioned, I have been told (don't know if it is accurate or not) that the boat taxi union has stopped all transportation to any beach except by official water taxi. Sort of the same as the land taxis are preventing private individuals from providing transportation to folks on land.

ILinda, I guess that some things may have changed, I certainly would not want to get anyone in hot water...
Getting to Las Gatas
You could always just ask at the shack...they will tell you if they can't take you.

temporarily, there is a road behind los gatas. i have walked there using it. I've seen taxis on it. its open while they install the water and sewage. but you have to walk further than taking the stroll along the beach.

We made it to Las Gatas via the rocky path. It was such a great adventure to add to our memories of Zihuatanejo!
LOVED the beach - everyone seemed great, and the cheese quesadillas (sp?) we delicious
Thanks for all of your recommendations!

That's what I love to read. Not just that you had a good vacation but that you had an adventure. THAT'S what Zihuatanejo is all about!

Congratulations on getting there the "best" way. If you're up for another adventure, and would like to support some restaurants that really need your business, try for a day at Barra de Potosi. You take a bus from downtown to Los Achotes and get off the bus, walk maybe 100 yards and hop in the back of a truck that take you to the beach--nice way to spend a day.
Getting to Las Gatas
I second the Barra suggestion. We eat at La Condesa, the closest one to Zihua. They could really use the help, since their place was severely damaged by recent storms.
