WHALE QUESTION

For the past couple of days, we've been seeing whales on our daily beach walks on Playa Blanca. I'm pretty sure they are humpback whales; but some of the troops think they are grey whales. I'm sure some of you guys on the board know what's what and I'd appreciate your views.

Cheers ...JB (CEO of SFA)

While there are many species of whales in the ocean in front of you, the most likely are Humpback whales. Grey whales do not travel this far south.

Today on La Ropa two whales came into the bay. Two guys jumped into a kayak and paddled out to see them. I got to see their pictures and video when they returned. It was a momma and baby. I was frightened for the kayakers since there would be very little proctection if they breached in the wrong direction.

Thanks for confirming my answer Tess, but please remember there are MANY species of whales, dolphin and porpoise in this part of the Pacific, so just because you see a whale does not make it a Humpback and all dolphins are not "Flipper" type bottlenose's...

You are right, of course, I was just going on the info of the above project that I have been following. I am from the land of grey whales. My parents had a house on the ocean in the Monterey Bay in California and watching whales has always been an important part of my life.

Not to mention that they are required to stay a specific distance away from them, to not disturb them!

Today 2 whales in bay in Ixtapa put on the best display of tail flopping and breeching I have ever seen.
