Can anyone explain why we see the fires in the hills (way away from the Centro) and what is going on?

Probably a controlled fire for planting purposes that got out of control

Or people burning their garbage or simply cooking on open fires.
Burning is also how land is cleared for invading by squatters, and election years always see a rise in land invasions.

We were at Casa Bahia last night about 7:30 and noticed it at the very top of the hill looking to the Northeast.

From where we were at Las Gatas it looked like the whole hillside was on fire. It started about 1:30 or so and burned into the night. At times the blazes were higher than the billowing smoke.

There have been large fires on the far left side of Cerro Viejo for over a week going up a canyon. Cleared land can now be seen.

According to this morning's news the fire behind El Hujal on Cerro del Vigía was set on purpose to clear land but got out of control and threatened homes in Vaso de Miraflores. Thankfully the Bomberos were able to cut a fireline and halt its progress.
The other fire visible was along the La Majahua "scenic" road. Its origin is unknown, though as dry as it is a cigarette and a little wind like we had last night are all that's needed. Los Bomberos also managed to extinguish it before it reached the structures of the land invaders of Valle Grande.
And we're still a couple of months away from the burning season.

Well...Tis the season
I was down to Papanoa today and there is plenty of blackened land between Z and Papanoa.
