Return of Vehicle Deposit in Baja?

by HolyMole, Monday, March 02, 2015, 08:40 (4268 days ago)

We're thinking of driving home via Baja California, but are concerned we might have problems getting our $300 US vehicle deposit back. We would prefer to cross into the USA at Tecate, instead of the zoo at Tijuana, but since Tecate doesn't even issue Temporary Vehicle Import Permits, we fear they also might not handle the exit process, (i.e. entering into the computer that the vehicle has left Mexico, and refunding our $300 deposit.)
Does anyone know if Tecate handles that? We'd sure like to avoid Tijuana, and a detour all the way to Mexicali is out of the question.
How about the crossing at Otey Mesa? Would they handle it?

Another thought: When we drove south through Baja a few years ago, we picked up our Vehicle permit in La Paz, before being allowed to get on the ferry for the mainland. We would be doing the reverse trip, arriving in La Paz from the mainland. Maybe they would "process" our exiting there in La Paz, along with the refund of our deposit? Anyone know?

Tecate will not process your deposit return-

This I know for sure- not Tecate. As for all your other questions I suggest you register with the great message board they have over there and ask them- http://forums.bajanomad.com/

Return of Vehicle Deposit in Baja?

I for one would drive back thru Tucson and avoid that ferry and the wait to get on and off. I've done it both ways and the Arizona route is much better and faster. And you don't have to sleep on that damned ferry.

Thanks, but my questions concerned getting back my vehicle deposit, not whether taking the ferry and returning north via Baja was a great idea or not. And getting home faster isn't our aim either, (until we reach the US border, that is. Then it's a beeline for Canada: wouldn't want to get sick or have an accident in the good 'ol USA and be bankrupted by their medical system).

That said, muchas gracias for mentioning sleeping on the ferry: I had forgotten that the Topolobampo/La Paz ferry leaves at 11 pm and arrives in La Paz at 6 am......not a pleasant schedule.....so we'll drop the whole idea and return home via the usual boring and unattractive Culiacan/Ciudad Obregon/Hermosillo/Nogales route. At least I'm assured of getting my deposit back in Nogales.
You just saved me a couple hundred $.

We just made the same run, and are spending the night in Ajo, Arizona.
You get to use the new Mazatlan bypass! For a car, 41p. and you completely skip the city-a real treat!

For us, the real treat IS Mazatlan. We'll spend 3 or 4 nights there, then overnight at San Carlos, then Tucson for some Rosatti's Pizza.
What the heck are you doing over in Ajo? We spent a night there 20 years ago, on one of our motorcycle trips from Canada. Actually, Ajo was kind of nice....very laid back, (like any other abandoned Phelps-Dodge copper town), with a very Mexican-like little zocalo.

We too, love Mazatlan. We actually spent a couple of winters there.
IF you stay in the area of the Gold Zone, take the bypass until you hit the first exit, labeled appropriately, Zona Dorada. It takes you past the new shopping center, complete with a Sears, and you end up at the marina, between the two bridges. It was so nice to avoid the major part of town.
Like you, we have the 500, 400, 300, 200 formula. That's approximately, in miles. From Mazatlan, we go to San Carlos, from there, Ajo, Arizona, because it's an easy border crossing, saves us miles, and is a nice road. To Palm Springs, where we are tonight, then home.
We will be home tomorrow, first time back on our beach since October 17. Yes, we are looking forward to our yard, garden and beach, but not the cold water. Fortunately, it will be 72F tomorrow, but 50 at night. Maybe someday we will be able to move to Zihua permanently. Because we work on line, we started working last week, so the vaca is definitely over!
Safe travels to you, too.

Do you cross at Sonoyta/Lukeville? No problems getting your vehicle deposit back at that crossing?
Heading north from San Carlos, where do you swing over to the west? Been to Bahia Kino? Is it worth a sidetrip, assuming we eventually cross at Nogales?
Re Mazatlan: we enjoy it for 3 or 4 days on the way south, then again on the way home. But for a long-stay, it can't compare to Zihua.
