Cheran road open?

We will be making a trip to Guadalajara next week. Wondering if there are any issues with the road through Cheran, Mich. Haven't traveled it in a couple years. It's certainly shorter and more beautiful than going through Morelia. I have heard that at some point it had been totally blocked to cars. Perhaps someone knows a link to find current info? Thanks.

We are going to Puerto Vallerta next week and going through Guadalajara. We are cutting up at Uruapan and not going to Morelia. I can not address the Cheran, Mich. issue but have been to Guadalajara the way we are going before and had no problems. We are spending a night at Zamora just to break up the drive.

We have gone that way before. It does take you through Cheran, and by the Paracutin Volcano. Quite scenic and no problems in the past. Our last trip we went from Lake Patzcuaro, through Zacapu, to Zamora. That route is more heavily traveled and a somewhat better road.

I can't say whether the road is open or closed, but when closed, (presumably you mean closed due to local protests, etc), I'd expect closures to be short-lived. We also try to avoid Morelia, so have taken Rte. 37 from the Guad/DF cuota down through Cheran, Paracho, Uruapan, etc for the last three years. Never had a problem, (even at night). Sometimes the going can be slow due to trucks, etc.....but that's been the extent of our problems.
