Tuesday morning wasn't quite as warm as Monday, and the rest of the day wasn't quite as hot, only getting up to 36°C. Still a bit warm and several degrees above average for this time of the year even with La Canícula.

Rain clouds were visible on the southern and western horizons this morning, and this evening a huge storm that looked like it was heading our way in the afternoon dissipated, leaving us with nothing but high humidity and no discernible breeze. Most people appeared uncomfortably warm along the waterfront this evening. The ocean water temperature continues above 31°C. If the predicted rains start happening, it should keep our temperatures mild. We usually just need a good couple of days of rains to change from La Canícula to our normal weather pattern for late summer. Hopefully soon.

You'd never know that Ixtapa's hotels registered over 75% occupancy or Zihuatanejo's over 62% this Tuesday. Hardly any tourists to be seen around town. Only one restaurant along the waterfront was doing any business this evening. Sales were extremely slow for downtown merchants who bothered to open. But hey, that new amphitheater at the pier entrance sure ought to draw us some more tourism, just like the mayor promises.

Still no lights at the pier after sunset. The insult to daily users of the pier continues by the municipal government.

The surf continues to look good. The current mar de fondo event is keeping the waves around a meter and a half or so. Swimmers need to watch out for strong currents near shore.

This tropical-style beachfront home with a pool offers plenty of comfort, privacy and relaxation. Located right on Troncones Beach within easy walking distance of the village as well as several convenience stores and numerous restaurants. https://youtu.be/Bioyai8Mrx4

Our hearts go out to the folks in Colombia affected by the 7.4 earthquake and the new fascist government that took power this Monday morning.

Monday began cloudy and warm, and it just kept getting hotter and hotter. It got up to 38°C in Zihuatanejo, which is, I believe, the hottest it's been here all year. No rain today, and the small percentage in the forecast for tonight simply can't be taken seriously. Maybe this Tuesday we'll get lucky. The water temperature is around 31.4°C, almost 2°C warmer than normal for this time of year. I expect we'll have a bleaching event of our local coral and that there will be fish die-offs of smaller species as well as a migration of larger species to cooler waters. It won't be long until it seriously affects local fishermen, who will have to seek economic relief from the municipal government, which is why they voice no opinions in public against anything the municipal government does.

Local tourism numbers are way down and so are sales. As bad as it is in Zihuatanejo, it's even worse for the merchants and restaurants in Ixtapa. All the new hot cement didn't attract any new tourists, in contrast to what they were promised by the mayor before she tore up their walkways and gardens and replaced it with her husband's family's cement. The only clients I saw in any waterfront restaurants this evening were a group of politicians. Everywhere else was empty. Pizzas locas had some business, but they're popular with locals who recommend them, and pizzas are a popular economic meal, like tacos.

I was musing today with some of my friends in the Virgin Islands who were also quite disappointed with their territorial government that, like ours, never seems to be able to resolve any real problems even though they manage to disappear hundreds of millions of dollars every year. It seems that everywhere more people are on the same page, and it all seems to be leading towards a more democratic socialist form of government, though many don't even realize that it's what they're describing. Here in Mexico's federal government we've been gravitating towards it for years since the Morena party came to power, and businesses and industries have been responding positively. Now if only we could get the crony capitalists out of the way, including locally. Legacy of a dying political party.

A good place to escape the problems of the world is Troncones. Tucked away in a quiet corner of Troncones is one of its loveliest vacation lodgings, Regalo del Mar. A uniquely Mexican small, exotic, luxurious tropical-style vacation guest inn on the beach at Playa Troncones with comfortable suites, bungalows, and a pool. Surrounded by exuberant gardens and natural beauty, it's a place for nature lovers, peaceful and ideal for relaxing. Far from anything resembling stress. (click to enlarge image)

Invalid driver license

A couple weeks ago Rob warned us that new DLs issued in Zihua might not be valid. Using the search he included we discovered that our new DLs from several months ago were no good.
So last week we went back to the DL office for a new set. Lots of people waiting. The machine you tap for an appointment number would not work. A nice lady came up to help us and explained that the office now processes only 30 applications a day. Today’s quota was filled. Further, she explained, that we need to arrive very early to grab a position. She had arrived at 5:00 AM and had still not been called - it was 10:00 AM. Five hour+ wait!!
We drove to La Union and got right in with no wait. Young lady there had us in and out with new licenses in minutes.

https://youtu.be/qK7g45oXX9Y

Saturday night was noisier than usual in downtown Zihuatanejo. Incredibly loud portable speakers make their owners wandering discotheques. A shame to see the scarce resources, i.e., rare earth materials, necessary for such speakers wasted so frivolously. And it would be nice if the local government did their job to help keep the volume down. Let folks party, but we don't need to hear it a block away. All the additional police in town for the holidays, but you'd never know it, and how can police from other places know what the local codes and laws are?

Rain was visible on the ocean's horizon this Sunday morning, and it rained on Cerro Viejo during the middle of the day, but still nothing in downtown Zihuatanejo. It keeps avoiding us. The forecast gives us a 50% chance of rain during the middle of the coming week. Fingers crossed.

While beachfront restaurants continue receiving a great deal of mostly low-budget visitors during the day, downtown shops struggle. It's impossible to prosper selling mostly trinkets and souvenirs for under a hundred pesos. But that appears to be about the extent of spending for most visitors so far this summer season. We're getting too few visitors with the purchasing power our tourism-dependent economy needs. So the occupancy numbers for Ixtapa may look high, but the purchasing power of too many visitors is extremely low, and it's hurting local businesses. This isn't progress. It's a lack of proper targeted marketing, the actual hard work that none of our so-called tourism authorities working for the local government appear to be doing, though they travel far and wide and attend many events and parties. I miss the local folks who actually used to do this work well back in the 90's. I can only reach so many people and answer so many of their questions through my meager efforts.

The more locals I speak with, the more I see how widely rejected "the scene of the crime" at the pier entrance is. The most common query I hear is "What was the mayor thinking?"

The surf continues looking pretty decent for the coming week and especially next weekend.

Don't expect to find much fish for sale at the waterfront this Monday morning. It's traditional that local fishermen don't go out to fish Sunday night but instead spend it with their families. Los lunes ni las gallinas ponen.

In our home we eat Mexican fare almost every single day, and I still find myself making groaning noises of ecstasy with almost every bite, even when my tortillas are cold. I just may be the luckiest Gringo in Mexico.

Mexico's men's fútbol team lost their match for the gold last night, but Mexico comes home from the Central American and Caribbean Games with 407 medals, 167 gold. Unfortunately, Zihuatanejo's David Ocampo didn't win any medals in his javelin-throwing event. But the games were a huge success, and many new young talented athletes made their mark. Santo Domingo was a beautiful venue for the games.

The rain predicted for last night never happened in downtown Zihuatanejo. Tamos sala'o. This is what the period known as La Canícula is notorious for here. Rain is in the forecast for this Sunday afternoon, but I'm not getting my hopes up.

This Saturday morning was ever-so-slightly less warm than Friday morning. The morning's cloud cover didn't last long, and the sun came out a-blazing. Though there was a slight increase in tourism, it seemed everyone was trying to avoid the outdoors except the surfers, who are enjoying some excellent surfing conditions each morning this week, and the surf's predicted to be even better by next weekend.

Fishermen are still bringing in a decent overnight catch. A few pargo here and there, some huachinango, jurel, flamenco, lots of cocinero and palometa, and a few tuna here and there, though tuna seem to be getting scarce recently.

Sorry to report that Roberto Rosas Chino of Roberto's Bistro in Troncones has passed away.

This August 8 is the 147th birthday of one of Mexico's most beloved heroes, Emiliano Zapata. ¡Tierra y Libertad!

More downtown waterfront restaurants were doing business this evening, which is good to see. Not a lot, and only La Porteña was actually busy, but we've only got 3 more weeks of summer vacation to take advantage of, and it hasn't exactly been a booming season.

https://youtu.be/p5orahqvj58

It was another hot and humid day. Morning cloudcover only delayed the inevitable for a few brief moments. Barely any breeze to speak of, and the ocean temperature at 31°C feels only slightly below the air temperature, which reached 36°C this Friday.

Hardly any visitors around. The cifras alegres from Sectur Guerrero report Zihuatanejo at 41% and Ixtapa at 80%, but even Ixtapa's shopkeepers and restaurant operators will tell you that it's dead there with extremely slow sales. I guess all that hot new cement doesn't attract visitors after all even though the mayor promised it would.

The downtown beach remained mostly empty today. We only saw a very few out-of-towners heading for the mercado this morning for their inexpensive breakfast. The tourists being attracted by the municipal government always seek the BBB services: bueno, bonito y barato. That's our main staple of national tourism, thanks to the travel agents and so-called influencers that the municipal government depends on to send us visitors, most of whom are only day trippers. They think places like Deborah's, Pizzas Locas and La Porteña are too expensive, and they tell each other on social media that all the restaurants at Isla Ixtapa and Las Gatas are ripoffs. It's a simple matter of attracting the wrong tourists for our destination, but our so-called tourism authorities just don't get it. They just say "things change" and we need to "adapt" while boasting in their speeches about our sustainable tourism and the need to spend millions building a lookout hill at the pier. Remind me again why we need politicians? It seems we'd be doing fantastic if it weren't for them.

Mexico's women's fútbol team took the gold medal last night in Santo Domingo for the Juegos Centroamericanos y del Caribe. ¡BRAVO! and the game for the gold medal between Mexico's men's team and Venezuela is just now getting underway, meaning I gotta go cheer on my team.

The surf is looking good every morning for the next week or so. Gnarly, dude!

Don't miss the Eco-Tianguis "Sanka" that happens every Saturday from 8:30 a.m. until 1:40 p.m. in the small plaza in front of the Vicente Guerrero school, across the street from the Museo Arqueológico de la Costa Grande in downtown Zihuatanejo by the waterfront where La Boquita canal runs into the bay. Besides wonderful handcrafts, they feature a variety of homegrown produce, fresh foods including pastries, breads and tamales, fresh coffee, juices and mezcal.
https://youtu.be/sTrREgCKyi4

Twice yesterday (Wednesday) Mexico's men's fútbol teams beat Panamá 4-0. First at the Juegos Centroamericanos y del Caribe 2026 in Santo Domingo. Then later at the Concacaf sub-20 Championship in Puebla and Mexico City (yesterday evening's match was in Puebla). Both Mexico's men's and women's teams are in the finals in Santo Domingo! Mexico's women's team plays Colombia this Thursday evening for the gold medal. And Mexico's men's team plays Venezuela Friday evening.

Just as we were getting settled in bed to watch the evening news, wouldn't you know we had a small earthquake! A 4.4 close by just offshore. We felt it pretty good and did our best to get outside quickly in case there was a larger follow-up. A slightly smaller one, a 4.0, occurred just off the coast of Lázaro Cárdenas a couple of hours later, but we were too busy blowing Z's by then to notice.

Beginning this Friday for about a week we are expecting a mar de fondo event with swells from 5 to 7 feet that may produce strong currents along the coast. We had an extremely high tide event this morning that was washing over much of the walkway at Playa La Madera, and it looks likely to continue for the next 3 or 4 days and could cause some severe beach erosion.

There's a chance of rain this Thursday evening as well as this Friday afternoon. We've been extremely fortunate not to have any major storms so far this year. But the heat has been extremely hard on us this summer, even for the Canícula.

Though Sectur of Guerrero's cifras alegres say Zihuatanejo has an occupancy of 66% and Ixtapa in the 70's, local sales don't reflect any corresponding economical benefit. The restaurants on the downtown waterfront were mostly empty this evening, except for La Porteña where mostly locals go. Local shops are barely seeing any sales except for inexpensive trinkets and cheap souvenirs. I expect many businesses will close after this season and not be able to reopen in the coming winter season. A damn shame. Frankly, I don't see how many of them who pay rents and employees are able to stay open. So many nice shops and restaurants, but way too few customers with the purchasing power they need to stay in business.

If you're a fan of mouth-watering recipes, one of the best reasons for visiting Ixtapa is to go to Deborah's Restaurant. Whether for breakfast, lunch or dinner, everything we've ever eaten there has been prepared to perfection and the service has always been excellent. Deborah also makes some of the best desserts around, so save room when you go.
https://youtu.be/qB0FzfN4Ol4

It was already warm and humid when we awoke this Wednesday morning. The overcast skies provided little relief, and the sun soon came out and warmed things up much more than the 36°C that was registered by local thermometers. There didn't seem to be that many people around in downtown Zihuatanejo today on the beach or in the waterfront restaurants. At around 31.5°C, the ocean doesn't provide much relief for bathers. Sales appeared to be slow for most downtown merchants. Merchants in Ixtapa complain that the "remodeled" shopping center is noticeably hotter than it used to be. Well duh. Se los dije.

The municipal government laid plastic, threw dirt on top of it, and then packed it down in the trench they cut beside the few remaining tamarindo and guamúchil trees at the pier entrance where they had damaged their roots earlier. So now the trees will get even less water from the rains on their western side. How unthoughtful of them. Not a shred of ecological decency. I'm truly astounded at the lengths they go to to kill our local trees while pouring their cement. Bummer!

The Danzón dancers had a fun time this evening in Plaza del Artista. Passersby sat and enjoyed the music and the dancing, part of our disappearing local culture.

The fishermen appeared to have enjoyed another bountiful night, and this Wednesday morning the mercado de los pescadores on Zihuatanejo's downtown beach was bustling with activity. Good to see. It's also good to see that the seafood section of the Mercado Municipal has finally opened back up after 6 months of renovations. Never mind they were told it would only be two months, same as the rest of the locatarios. Now the municipal government says the restaurants currently in the street will have to wait another two months for their section of the mercado to be ready for them to occupy.

This coming weekend is looking good for surfers! Hang in there.

The complex has a pool, but the ocean at La Madera is often calm enough for easy swimming. (click to enlarge photo)
https://youtu.be/VR3ER37ch0Q

We enjoyed another night of perfect sleeping weather and awoke to clear skies and calm seas. The local fishermen enjoyed a bountiful overnight catch, and the fishermen's market on Playa Principal was a busy place this Tuesday morning.

Apparently the mayor has decided that the pier's entrance needed a lookout point, a mirador, so that's why a multi-million-peso hill is being built there that blocks everyone's views from all around. I've seen a lot of really and truly STUPID public projects in my lifetime here and elsewhere, but this one wins the top prize. If we had a mayoral candidate who would run on undoing all the nonsense of this and the past municipal administrations, they would win in a landslide. We want our trees, beaches and VIEWS back! The damn excessive use of new cement everywhere has made an already hotter-than-normal summer even more unbearable.

While there are plenty of visitors here filling our beaches and many waterfront restaurants (since there's almost nowhere else to sit at too many beaches), sales have still been slow in downtown Zihuatanejo and in Ixtapa's recently remodeled shopping centers. I guess all the new cement there didn't attract any new customers after all, though that's what the mayor promised them when she undertook her recent "remodeling" project there. The problem remains the lack of targeted advertising to attract visitors who have spending money to keep our local businesses prosperous.

We were surprised to see absolutely NO ONE at any of the local bars on Calle Agustín Ramírez this evening where there are usually dozens of foreigners hanging out. Their favorite hangouts were all empty. We're very sorry to see this, but we understand it's a result of the lack of attention to a problem by the municipal government. If only we could distract them from their favorite project of pouring cement, but it seems more and more like a lost cause. Thousands of locals feel the same way as you.

Although rain remains in the forecast for this Wednesday, I expect it will be just another picture-postcard-perfect day in paradise.

Sunday night's forecasted rain never materialized, but overnight temperatures were quite comfortable for sleeping with the windows open and a fan on medium. Another night where sleeping under the sheets was optional. But rain continues in the forecast for the next several days along with otherwise quite pleasant weather. Poor Pátzcuaro got hit with hail, extremely heavy rain and a waterspout this Monday leaving considerable damage.

Monday morning was overcast with mild temperatures. The ocean is extremely calm and perfect for swimming, albeit bathtub warm. Bummer for surfers, but conditions will improve for them over the next few days, and by the weekend things should be gnarly.

The presence of tourists has dropped considerably. Sales were minimal in downtown Zihuatanejo for shops and restaurants. So far the summer season has been mostly a disappointment. We're simply not receiving as many visitors with the purchasing power that we used to get at this time of year.

I was extremely saddened to see that an ancient guamúchil tree near La Lonja y Casanova's restaurants on Calle Adelita had been cut down recently. A real shame. There was no reason to cut it down that I'm aware of, and I've passed by there regularly for decades before there was even a street there. Prune it maybe, but remove it and leave a stump, no. A shame the municipal government doesn't appreciate trees, especially older ones, as much as it does cement.

Fortunately yesterday's extreme heat didn't repeat itself today thanks to a very welcome overnight rain that came with some strong winds. The rain stopped right after daybreak, but the wind continued for another couple of hours under overcast skies. Thank goodness! The air was crisp and clean looking across the bay, and the ocean was extremely calm in front of Playa Principal, though I could see the waves were hitting the rocky shore between La Madera and La Ropa from a westerly angle, so it may not have been so calm at La Ropa.

Servicios Públicos got the beaches, roads and walkways cleaned rather quickly this morning just as busloads of tourists arrived, many seeking places for breakfast. Elvira's was packed full with one group of daytrippers.

Our friend Mauricio of El Arrayán Restaurant happened to be passing by as we strolled along the waterfront this morning, and he gave us a large flat pan de cemita made in Coacoyul, a local recipe quite different from anywhere else and extremely delicious. It went very well with our locally grown coffee, and it made our Sunday morning even more special.

Despite the cifras alegres released by Sectur Guerrero that show high occupancy rates for Ixtapa and Zihuatanejo, sales remain sluggish for local merchants, especially in Ixtapa even though they receive more tourists.

There was good music at the Cancha Municipal this Sunday evening! People were dancing everywhere up and down the waterfront where the music could be heard. Typical good Sunday evening vibes.

The pier

So what the plan for the pier? Dirt pile high and level with the pier or higher from pier cam.
Is it just supposed to be the same as it was with new concrete or something special with bench’s ,awnings and ticket booth for boats? Maybe restrooms and drinking fountains? Looks like a lot of work just to pour another concrete walkway.

While the evening was mild enough to sleep with the windows open and a fan on, even with cloudcover the Saturday morning temperatures rose quickly, eventually reaching 37°C. It was so bad that a warning was issued due to a thermal sensation of around 44°C. Unfortunately, the ocean offered little relief for beachgoers with a water temperature of 31.4°C. Almost 2°C above normal. Conditions are expected to be the same this Sunday. It's important to stay hydrated with conditions like these. There's a chance of rain this Sunday, but it seems to be the same every day, and we watch storm clouds pass us by in the sierra or in the ocean to the south without any relief.

This evening it's still quite hot and uncomfortable, with no breeze anywhere except a slight breeze at the pier. The usually refreshing breeze at the pier from the sierra is now being blocked by the small hill the mayor has built at the pier entrance. The hits keep coming.

While there certainly are many visitors here, sales remain slow at best. It's too hot this evening to enjoy dining outdoors. Waiters look worn out, and diners are all fanning themselves and rushing through their meals. The Sirena Gorda had a small crowd of mostly foreigners listening to some good music, and La Porteña was busy as usual.

If you aren't following the Central American & Caribbean Games in beautiful Santo Domingo, you're missing out.
We enjoyed another picture-postcard-perfect day in paradise this Friday after a peaceful night where the temperature dropped down to the comfort zone. Sleeping under the sheets was again optional as is usual at this time of year.

A good deal of visitors showed up today. The bus travelers were towing along suitcases and coolers at the crack of dawn. Unfortunately now they arrive to the parking area at Las Salinas at the end of Cinco de Mayo. Quite a long haul to downtown. And all the shops, stores, restaurants and lodgings that opened along Paseo de La Boquita sit empty, starving for customers. A damn shame the municipal government couldn't manage to keep the buses arriving in the same area.

Sales were up today from previous days for downtown shopkeepers, and the downtown waterfront restaurants were mostly busy well into the evening. Good to see! We need more of this!

The night was perfect for sleeping, and sleeping under the sheets was optional. Clear skies greeted us this Thursday morning from horizon to horizon. Waves seemed calmer in Zihuatanejo's bay than the previous day, and visitors were in the water from dawn to dusk. A few clouds showed up over the sierra around midday, and by evening it was mostly overcast with rainclouds visible to the southeast. We'll see what the night brings.

The obscenity continues at the municipal pier with yet more dirt piled even higher than the day before, now reaching around 3 meters high, blocking the beautiful VIEWS that are Zihuatanejo's main selling point. If only we had real reporters asking questions and a real cabildo keeping checks and balances on the mayor's excesses. But the project has greatly deviated from the original plan, and no one has a clue what's going on, much less why. We are not happy, but people are afraid to speak up since the murder of ecological reporter Alex Serna who was murdered shortly after denouncing the pier project.

Irregularidades de la obra del muelle municipal de Zihuatanejo documentado por Alex Serna.
https://www.facebook.com/reel/2107955253095693

There seemed to be less visitors around today. We saw plenty of folks walking along the waterfront this evening, but less than previous days. Might be a Thursday thing. Sales were sluggish, and the downtown waterfront restaurants were mostly empty, sorry to say. Hopefully things will pick up again this weekend.

Fishermen say they're having a harder time finding fish because the extremely warm water sends the fish seeking cooler water. Storms help cool the water with their clouds blocking the sun, so as they continue to form and pass by, hopefully they'll bring some relief for the fishermen along our coast. The water along our coast is currently measuring around 31.4C, almost two degrees warmer than normal for this time of year.

One of the nicer more affordable vacation rentals in La Madera neighborhood is Casa Linda & Casa Adelita, one located atop the small hill at La Madera with views of the bay and town, the other on peaceful Calle Adelita. The first with three apartments, the second with four. They can be rented all together or individually, each beautifully decorated with Mexican handcrafts, and they share a pool and Jazuzzi. One and two bedrooms, some with sofa beds. All with full kitchens, living area, balconies, and shared access to a garden with BBQ facilities as well as the rooftop terrace. (click to enlarge photo)

We awoke to lightning and thunder and a nice light rain again this Wednesday morning that lasted until around 7:30 or so before stopping, and soon afterwards the sun came out. Not nearly as active as the storm the night before. It helped keep the temperature mild for the rest of the morning.

Unfortunately no warning signs were placed at any beaches to warn bathers of the health risk of swimming in the bay after a heavy rain due to all the runoff from the hillsides.

Also unfortunately this morning a panga captain tried to use the pier at Playa Linda, and tourists were swept off the platform and into the water by a large wave. This is the reason the pier had been closed the previous day. But since there were no officials from the port captain's office present at Playa Linda at that hour enforcing the pier closure, the panga captain felt emboldened to put people's lives at risk. Playa Quieta continues to be the safest place in that region for water taxis to use to access Isla Ixtapa. It was always sheer stupidity to put a pier at Playa Linda.

Large swells up to 2½ meters high are expected again this Thursday. Good for surfers. The chances of rain are minimal this jueves pozolero, so enjoy our beaches and our local pozole.
