It rained sometime overnight, but I didn't hear a thing. I only saw the water on my roof that had to be swept off this morning. The evening was refreshing and perfect for sleeping with the windows open and the fan on low. Sleeping under the sheets was optional, but I still found myself snuggling with my sweetie.

The port of Zihuatanejo and the pier at Playa Linda are open to navigation again. The seas are mostly calm now, and you'd almost never know we just had a hurricane and giant waves along our coast here just a couple of days ago.

But it didn't take much to work up a sweat this morning. The sun came out bright and hot, and with the overnight moisture, things quickly got steamy. It was still quite muddy at the pier. I felt bad for the busloads of day-trippers with their coolers, suitcases, bags, elderly, and babes in arms waiting for the water taxis to take them to Las Gatas who all had to traipse through the mud to reach the pier.

Another zone of tropical disturbance is located just to the southwest of us in the Bahía de Tehuantepec. It's expected to form a tropical depression either late this weekend or early next week and to move parallel with our coast. Oh boy. Here we go again.

Don't miss the Eco-Tianguis "Sanka" that happens every Saturday from 8:30 a.m. until 1:40 p.m. in the small plaza in front of the Vicente Guerrero school, across the street from the Museo Arqueológico de la Costa Grande in downtown Zihuatanejo by the waterfront where La Boquita canal runs into the bay. If it looks like rain, then they'll set up in the Cancha Solidaridad two blocks to the east just off Paseo de La Boquita. After a brief rain Wednesday evening, the rest of the night was inconsequential, though the waves kept growing and crashing higher up the beach, eventually reaching the walkway, the plazas and even the street. The temperature was quite comfortable, and we slept soundly under the sheets with the fan on medium until just before dawn this Thursday when the wind picked up as it started coming from the south.

By sunrise tropical storm-force winds were whipping the palm fronds around and ripping hats off people's heads as they walked along the waterfront. Walking on the pier was an effort leaning into the wind. Quite a bit of Playa Principal simply washed away from the erosion, so now it's about half cement and half sand. Playa La Madera was totally unusable as were the rest of our beaches with waves washing all the way up to the lodgings and restaurants. Waves were washing over the walkway to La Madera, soaking people trying to transit it. The newly planted ceiba trees atop the new hill at the pier's entrance blew over, losing branches, before they were righted and propped up with boards as they should've been before the hurricane arrived (a true comedy of errors). As much propaganda as the municipal government made about how ready they were for the storm, they didn't remove any of the "mes de la patria" displays they set up on the beaches and walkways, allowing some to get washed away while others became potential missiles because of the wind.

The port remained closed all day, and there was no boat traffic to Las Gatas or Isla Ixtapa. If there were any tourists around they were few and far between. There was a convention of travel agents in Ixtapa that ended today, but you'd never know it.

This evening the winds have died back down, and the waves have decreased in size, but the walkway along the downtown waterfront continues to be full of sand and mostly empty. Most of the restaurants didn't even bother opening.

Many locals have felt stressful the past few days because of Huracán Polo, so since this afternoon when the winds and waves died down it has been a period of relief and relaxation. Whew!

There was a folkloric music and dancing event in Plaza del Artista this evening that apparently was never announced, so of course almost no one showed up. Bummer. The music and dancing were very good.

Tuesday night the town was closed up tight. Nothing was open and almost no one was out. People were at home glued to the weather reports on their TVs, computers, smartphones, and radios. Sleep didn't come easy with the anxiety. But it never rained. Around 3:30 in the morning a breeze kicked up that seemed to be coming from the hills and blowing out to sea, but it didn't last very long. We were surprised to awake to a dry town. Expecting rain that never fell until later in the afternoon. Bank employees were standing about in the street this morning when we walked across town, apparently whoever had the keys wasn't expecting to open and arrived late. BBBV never did open. But the hardworking folks at the mercado, fruterías and tortillerías were certainly all working as were the workers remodeling the mercado.

It's still totally overcast and sprinkling off and on, but it looks like at least we'll all get a good restful sleep tonight.

The port of Zihuatanejo will remain closed this Jueves Pozolero, but unless the waves are large in the bay, which they aren't at the moment, then it's expected that trips around the bay and from the pier to Las Gatas and back will be allowed. Isla Ixtapa will remain closed.

The tourists who are here apparently aren't leaving their lodgings. The streets and the waterfront remained deserted all day. There's almost no beach in Ixtapa to enjoy because the waves are washing so high that they're uncovering turtle nests, and their eggs can be seen washing around in the surf at the waterline.

La marea extremadamente alta y las lluvias abrieron la barra completamente en la boca del canal La Boquita en Zihuatanejo.

No rain Monday night, but ominous-looking clouds remained with us most of the day, though the sun came out and it almost looked like a normal day for a while. There've been a few wind gusts and light sprinkles. The port has been closed all day and will remain so on Wednesday. Streets are empty of cars and people. Everything is closed down and shut tight. Pangas are tied up tightly to each other on the beach, and some captains moved their cruisers into the lagoon.

Hurricane Polo is about to start affecting the coast of Guerrero more seriously. It's almost stationary but still moving east in our direction at 4 mph. The most dangerous hurricane is a slow-moving one, and it's already the second most powerful hurricane ever recorded in the Pacific. We're expecting torrential rains and tropical force winds this Tuesday night and throughout Wednesday. (click to enlarge image)

We're expecting waves up to 5 and 6 meters high along our coast. They could easily wash over the beaches in Zihuatanejo's bay at even half that size.

Like most folks, we stocked up on essentials this morning. Hatches are battened down. All we can do at this point is hope the weather forecasters are right and ride out whatever comes our way. One little wobble and our coast would be devastated. Because it's slow-moving, our mountains have a more negative effect on it than if it were fast-moving like Otis was when it slammed into Acapulco.

Just to keep us on our toes, there's another big storm forming up right behind this one. There ain't no reason with the hurricane season.

This Sunday night and Monday morning we had a nice overnight rain with some high winds off and on. The rain stopped right after the sun came out. It was quite breezy most of the day, and the temperatures have been quite mild and pleasant. But there's mud and dust everywhere from the Saturday night's flooding. We saw people still removing water and ruined things from their properties as we walked across town late this afternoon. Truly heartbreaking to see the suffering and losses even though so many of our neighbors take it in stride. So many good and hardworking people we live with here.

Schools will be closed all along the coast of Guerrero this Tuesday while Hurricane Polo continues to gain strength and move closer to the Costa Grande. The hurricane is expected to grow rapidly in strength to a Cat 5. The projected trajectory has it moving towards us then proceeding northward parallel to the coast before moving further out to sea. The mountains should afford us some protection, but we've already seen some high wind gusts and torrential downpours, and that's what we can expect more of, especially by noon Wednesday as it moves closest to us with windspeeds of over 150 kts near its eyewall.

Evacuation shelters are being prepared for people who might need them by Protección Civil y Bomberos. You can call them at 755 554 7551 for info. Unfortunately I haven't seen any details on where the shelters are other than the Conalep school in Colonia Fovisste. Probably the Auditorium Municipal at the end of the street near the Telmex office.

Right now it's a beautiful evening out with overcast skies and a light breeze. No visitors around that I've seen.

Saturday night in less than 20 minutes of rain, downtown Zihuatanejo suffered one of the worst floods it's ever had IN RECORD TIME. Although the hardworking cleanup crews of Zihuatanejo's municipal government did an amazing job, the fact that they had so much to clean up where normally they never had to before is the elephant in the room that local media and the municipal government are trying to avoid. Of course the new dead-end road at Capricho del Rey was a major job to clean up. Something that never had to be done before it was "remodelled" with tons of costly cement. Before the remodel, they could just shovel it around or toss a few wheelbarrows of dirt or gravel, and that would fix it. Now they had to spend hours with water tanker trucks and a crew of sweepers. Many downtown residents and merchants lost property and merchandise last night. Thanks to all our new streets and walkways on our hillsides, especially the parts that until relatively recently were ecological zones, now denuded of trees, the same as is currently happening to the hills above La Ropa and Las Gatas.

Our flooding problem is something we've known about for decades. It's not new. What's new are the extent to which the flooding occurs and the reduced amount of time that it now takes to flood downtown. I counted LESS THAN 20 MINUTES from when the rain began to fall and the sighting of the first muddy wave coming from the direction of La Boquita Canal along Juan N. Álvarez Street that signified intense flooding. A new record, and I've been keeping the score for decades. What used to take 2 hours or more to happen is now down to less than 20 minutes. That's evidence of criminal negligence by part of the city government for allowing so many illegal settlements and so much deforestation in what were our ecological zones surrounding the bay and for building so many cement roads and walkways that don't have any consideration for pluvial drainage in addition to developments that block more and more of the natural drainage towards Las Salinas Lagoon.

They need to do better! Especially considering the current wasteful spending for an unnecessary project going on at Zihuatanejo's pier area. And considering the hundreds of millions of pesos "invested" in fixing this problem by previous administrations

A tropical storm off our coast is expected to come closer to the coast and quickly form into a hurricane over the next few days. Be prepared for strong winds and torrential rains in the coming days. Last night was the first heads up.

Una tormenta se acerca a la bahía de Zihuatanejo durante el anochecer.

While Lupita and I diligently participated in today's Simulacro Sísmico Nacional 2026, most people apparently didn't. Tourists we saw in the downtown streets were totally unaware and uninterested. A few neighbors appeared in the streets, but most didn't, at least we didn't see them. Did you participate? How'd it go?

So the parking lot for buses near Plaza Kioto is open once again. Not sure what the problem is that they keep closing, but for all the small inexpensive hotels that have sprung up in the immediate area hoping to cash in on these tourists, this is good news.

Pan dulce with a licuado de plátano is a delicious way to start the day along with fresh locally grown coffee with a dash of fresh cinnamon. Mmmmm!

Visitors enjoyed a perfect day for the beach except for the water that is potentially unsafe for swimming because of Thursday's rain. But apparently folks didn't mind because they were in the water. Of course, most wouldn't get ill until they got home, so local officials apparently prefer to turn a blind eye and not consider it a local problem. Tourist destinations should act more responsibly, and I know of many that do. A shame that here isn't one of them. I'm sure we can do better!

A tropical disturbance forming up out to sea off our coast is expected to become a tropical storm within the next 2 or 3 days and continue forming into a hurricane. It's expected to get quite close to our coast while it gains strength before hopefully moving northwestward. So we could get quite a bit of wind and rain from this storm. Now's the time to start making preparations.

We finally got a little rain Thursday night when a storm blew in, first with loud booms of thunder followed by heavy winds, then big fat drops that turned into a brief deluge. The wind died down after a short while, but the lightning and thunder continued, and the rain continued off and on for a couple of hours. By morning the pier was a muddy mess, and the few tourists who had charters scheduled and who wanted to go to Las Gatas had to tramp through the mud and do balancing acts to reach the pier. A damn shame no contingency plans were in place for the rains, but then the entire unnecessary and unwanted project has been poorly conceived and carried out.

Friday's temperatures have been extremely pleasant all day. What a relief from the oppressive heat and humidity of yesterday! Unfortunately the water in the bay is probably not safe for swimming due to the rain the night before. A shame local officials don't warn our visitors of the health risk.

Today was a day of extreme tides, for us, and the boat landings at the municipal pier were practically unusable. A shame floating landings weren't used instead of the cement structures that are already crumbling apart.

This Saturday at 12 noon there will be a Simulacro Sísmico Nacional. Those of you here in the Costa Grande with Mexican phone numbers will hear a loud alarm warning of an impending seismic wave. In our case we'll be responding to a simulated 7.7 earthquake with an epicenter in Tehuacán, Puebla. You don't have to participate if you don't want to, but it's good practice to be prepared and to know how to respond. So if you see people participating and you don't have a Mexican phone number, at least you'll know what's going on, so don't panic.

Thursday morning began quite warm and humid. A walk to the mercado for tortillas was enough exercise for the morning. There was no breeze for most of the day and into the evening. Just a sweltering heat with high humidity, hopefully a precursor to coming rains such as are forecasted for this evening.

It looks like a hurricane may form off our coast during the coming week. If it just sits there and grows for several days, as it's expected to do, then there's a good chance we'll get some much-needed rain. The problem with slow-moving storms is they are also the least predictable. One little wobble can make all the difference, as Otis did, hitting Acapulco three years ago instead of us or John a year later. The direct hit we had from Huracán Rick in 2021 was enough for us. Don't need any more like that.

To say that Zihuatanejo is dead right now is an understatement. There may be people at the hotels in Ixtapa, but there was barely a handful of visitors in Zihuatanejo today. The boats to Las Gatas hardly ran back and forth across the bay. Beachfront restaurants along Playa Principal sat mostly empty. Hardly anyone was in the streets. During our walk this evening the basketball games at La Cancha were the only thing happening, and there weren't many people there.

Unfortunately, this is the time of year when we see an increase in robberies and break-ins, so be vigilant and stay alert to people acting as lookouts in your neighborhood.

Sad to hear about the death of Peter Max, one of my favorite artists from the 60's. I had some of his posters on my walls back then including this one from the NYC clothing store "The Different Drummer", and one of my childhood friends who was also a big fan and had cool posters of his in his bedroom later became a good friend of Peter's and has many cool stories to tell.

We were surprised to see that there were NO events in downtown Zihuatanejo for the Noche del Grito. What few visitors were here wandered about aimlessly looking for an event that wasn't happening. The Palacio Municipal is an inconvenient location for most of us, but the downtown streets and waterfront were mostly empty Tuesday night.

Most people in Mexico watched El Grito on TV at home with their family, as we usually do.

In Tuesday night's Grito in Mexico City, Presidenta Sheinbaum mentioned Antonia Nava, a hero of the war for independence from Spain who is from Tixtla here in Guerrero. She has never before been included in the VIVAs. Hundreds of thousands of people attended the free concert and the Grito at the Zócalo in Mexico City without incident. Meanwhile, in Zihuatanejo a friend who was there said someone was killed at the Grito at the Palacio Municipal, though no local media report it.

All across Mexico and around the world, Mexicans and countries friendly to Mexico, including Iran, commemorated Mexico's Día de la Independencia. More Mexicans are prouder of their country and their heritage than ever. Mexico está de moda, as Presidenta Sheinbaum likes to say.

According to Guerrero's Secretaría de Turismo, Ixtapa's hotels had over 71% occupancy today, though you'd never have noticed since almost none left their hotels. Zihuatanejo's occupancy was reported at just over 24%, and even that may be an exaggeration. That's why we call them cifras alegres. They just don't seem to reflect reality.

This Wednesday we enjoyed our comida at one of the very few restaurants open in downtown Zihuatanejo, Los Braseros. Besides the excellent food and service, their A/C feels great during hot afternoons like today's.

Zihuatanejo is likely to be rationing water by January of next year due to the lack of rain this year. The earliest we'll ever have run out of water. But we'll keep building condos and luxury resorts and residences because "Zihuatanejo must grow", instead of implementing a moratorium and getting our house in order. Got cement to sell! It turns out the previous mayor lied to us about his "pozo radial" resolving our water problems. This is one of the topics that Alex Serna, the ecologist and reporter, reported on frequently. The current mayor asked us not to water our plants so much while she enjoys her luxury home with a pool and luscious gardens with her own gardener. Poor hard-working folks are expected to go days without water beginning in January. Some already haven't had water for days and weeks.

A few tourists showed up today to enjoy this evening's festivities and tomorrow's holiday. This Tuesday evening we celebrate El Grito de Dolores Hidalgo, aka El Grito de la Independencia. And this Wednesday is the official Día de la Independencia. There will be a parade at 08:00 downtown along Calle Juan N. Álvarez. Café Caracol's terrace would be an excellent place to view it from.

I hope everyone enjoys the festivities. Mexico's president will give the famous GRITO from the balcony of the Palacio Nacional around 11PM. You should be able to watch it live on YouTube if you don't have any Mexican TV channels. It should be a beautiful evening. ¡VIVA MÉXICO!

We finally got a little bit of rain overnight, and we awoke to a refreshing Monday morning in Zihuatanejo with mild temperatures and everything washed clean. Hopefully, we'll have a repeat this Monday night.

Another day with hardly any tourists to be found anywhere. Many businesses didn't bother opening today, and it's even worse in Ixtapa with the all-included hotels. Unfortunately the terrible job of promoting Ixtapa being done by our municipal authorities is attracting people with no money to spend, all looking for "los tres B: bueno, bonito y barato". Restaurants are being particularly hurt, with no help at all coming from the municipal government besides pouring cement of the mayor's family and trying to fool people into thinking it's progress.

A shame no one was here to enjoy our beautiful weather today. It was partly cloudy for most of the morning, but the sun finally came out. This evening a sliver of the crescent moon could be seen flirting with Venus in the western sky.

This Tuesday evening is the Grito de la Independencia. There's going to be a big wingding at the Palacio Municipal here in Zihuatanejo as well as at the Palacios Municipales in La Unión and Petatlán, but most of us will watch Presidenta Claudia Sheinbaum give the Grito at the Palacio Nacional overlooking the Zócalo in Mexico City where there will be a huge party. ¡Viva México!

If you're a fan of mouth-watering recipes, one of the best reasons for visiting Ixtapa is to go to Deborah's Restaurant. Whether for breakfast, lunch or dinner, everything we've ever eaten there has been prepared to perfection and the service has always been excellent. Deborah also makes some of the best desserts around, so save room when you go.

Another night with no rain, and another muggy morning in Zihuatanejo. This Sunday was another perfect beach day, and a few more visitors showed up to enjoy it. A shame the ones who visit Playa Las Gatas have to return to a dark unlit pier after sunset since the municipal government shut off the lights over 4 months ago.

The bay waters were calm today, and the folks who showed up were enjoying all our local beaches. Ixtapa didn't look very busy around midday when I checked. This Sunday evening there were almost no visitors around except for the tourists still returning from Playa Las Gatas. The Cancha, the waterfront and the streets were filled with mostly locals out strolling with their families.

Our dear friend Joaquín is back in town visiting his restaurant La Porteña after having been away for a few weeks. He says he's just making sure things are running smoothly. It was again the busiest of all the waterfront restaurants in downtown Zihuatanejo. Joaquín says they'll be closing for their annual vacation after September 20th.

It's extremely unusual for us not to have passing storms and frequent rains during September. This is usually our wettest month, but so far it's barely rained and the storms seem to keep missing our region. There's a high probability of overnight rain, again, in the forecast for this Sunday evening, but it always seems to either swerve around us or peter out as it reaches us.

One of our region's truly lovely vacation lodgings is Casa La Paloma, a place that will take your breath away and leave you wanting to stay longer than you planned. The changes began when Air Canada's winter 2027 schedule replaced the Saturday morning flight with a Thursday Rouge service. Over the past two weeks, it has also routed the southbound leg through Montreal, turning the trip into an overnight journey. Some nonstop return flights still appear on Air Canada’s website, but I worry they too will eventually require connections.

Before COVID, three flights operated weekly from YYZ to ZIH—two by Air Canada and one by Sunwing. Ticket prices have more than doubled over the past five years. Unfortunately, all but the most devoted Zihua visitors now have a strong incentive to choose other Mexican destinations. ZIH needs more visitors with the spending power to support the local economy, and the added cost and inconvenience of travelling there will not help.

Let’s hope and encourage Porter Airlines to take over the route. It could be more profitable than competing with Air Canada and other carriers on the already well-served Puerto Vallarta and Cancun routes.
