Why is it you can't have a simple civil conversation? As far as I know Dave's right. No dolphins have washed up dead along our shores. Only turtles. The atuneros were politely but firmly invited by representatives of 2 of our local fishing co-ops to fish elsewhere and they finally left local coastal waters. Turns out they were from Manzanillo. Colima.

I believe I was having a civil conversation. I feel insulted by his comment. Like I said, I have seen the video from my friends FB page. If I knew how to post it from FB I would. I'll ask my buddy to give me more detail as to what he was seeing that day and get back to you. I doubt he is lying. Why would he?
I think it's obvious that when a vessel sweeping a net around a school of tuna, there is going to be bycatch. And with bycatch there is mortality.

Atuneros (reply)

Probably fishermen from Mazatlán. It's what they do. Have only seen shrimpers and they leave a trail of dead turtles behind them all up and down the coast. Haven't heard any reports of dead porpoises or anyone complaining about atuneros.

Authorities? We have authorities? I thought it was every man for himself.

Soon the Sector Naval will be taking control of the Capitanía and from there hopefully other federal dependencies such as Conapesca will establish a more effective presence and with a more functional budget than they have historically had here.

Seafood - Mahi Mahi (reply)

Actually, 'red snapper' of the northern Pacific is a misnomer for one of the various species of rockfish (e.g. vermillion rockfish, china rockfish, yellow-eyed rockfish). Huanchinango is the red snapper found in the warmer Pacific waters of Mexico. And, just to make matters worse, there is also a species of red snapper found on the Gulf of Mexico coast.

Seafood - Mahi Mahi (reply)

Letty's & Chendo's serve a great mahi-mahi, lightly breaded & stuffed w/shrimp. Looking for ideas of other restaurants that may have similar offering. Lightly breaded, stuffed w/shrimp, cheese, etc.
OR
char-grilled w/shrimp and cheese. Last year while in area, tried another restaurant and the fish seemed to be steamed in foil (fish was actually served in the foil). Fish was watery and mushy. Would not recommend. Where, somehwere along the front by the pier. Have a hard time remembering the names of the places.

Shrimp is not caught by local fishermen, and only Kau-Kan has their own shrimp farm, so it is not something I would recommend if you're looking for fresh seafood.

The dorado empapelado that you said was all watery (I call it juicy) is one of my favorite dishes and one of the very best ways to prepare dorado so that it preserves everything tasty and nutritious about the fish. I usually order dorado empapelado encebollado (smothered in onions), a recipe I fell in love with when I lived in St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands. It's how we would cook our fresh catch in the sand on a moonlit cruise to Buck Island.

If you know how you want your fish prepared, then pretty well any restaurant can cook it for you any way you like. Daniel's, Rufo's, La Porteña, Pizzas Locas, and El Arrayan are all places that specialize in grilled foods.

Breaded = empanizado
Grilled = a la parrilla
Stuffed = relleno
