taking a bus to Troncones (reply)

Here’s what we did yesterday. Walked along Calle Cocos and took the minibus driving along just in front of Dona Licha’s restaurant that had La Union written on the windscreen. Told the conductor we were headed to Playa Troncones. After going through the back side of Ixtapa and Pantla, we were dropped off at a caseta along the main road and we paid M$31 each. We waited about 15 minutes and a combi pulled up going down to the beach. We asked to go all the way down to Majahua which was M$25 each. Walked down to the ocean then took a hour or so wandering along the rocky point, along Bahia Manzanilla, another rocky point, and along the length of Playa Troncones to the village. Enjoyed a cold adult beverage at Mi Casa Su Casa before tucking into a nice lunch and a dip in their pool. The ocean isn’t safe for swimming as the massive surf is an awesome sight but a powerful deterrent. Four of us ended up taking a cab up to the caseta up top (M$50) and our minibus back to Zihua pulled up within short order. After many years of coming to Zihua we had never done this trip but I highly recommend it as the beach is beautiful and unfettered by purveyors of trinkets, jet skis, or parachute rides.

Thanks to all who contributed here. Very helpful and much appreciated. Sounds much more straightforward that I had originally suspected...which is, of course, often the case. Thanks!

taking a bus to Troncones (reply)

Took this trip twice this year. Catch the "La Union" van at the transport hub in Centro on Av. Las Palmas just off Av. Benito Juarez. The cost in early March 2019 was $31 MXN pesos. Tell driver to let you off at Troncones stop. Once off the van, cross the highway, walk to the Pemex gas station (on the left side of the road) and wait for another van marked "Playa Troncones" to stop and pick you up. (Or, you can keep walking a little further and wait for the van at bus stop "caseta" on the corner of the road that goes directly into Troncones.) The fare to the end of the line (Punta Mahajua) was $24 MXN pesos. The fare to downtown Troncones is a little less. The last van leaves Punta Mahajua in Troncones at 5:00pm for the return trip. Hope this helps.

We are planning a one-night stay in Troncones, in the midst of our Zihua vacation. Is there bus service there and back that we can access? Thanks.

Just to add: This La Union bus starts in Centro behind the market. Where ever you are staying have them call for the Combi to pick you up at the cocos stand on the highway. It will take about 50 minutes to get here from Z. The Combi transportation is very unreliable.

taking a bus to Troncones (reply)

Get to the Sam’s Club on Highway 200 in Zihuatanejo. The buses that will drop you off near the road to Troncones will be marked as going to La Union.

Tell the driver you are going to Troncones. The driver will let you off on the highway. I think the last time I took this bus (November 2018) it was about M$30.

Walk across the highway and down a dip onto a secondary road. Walk about 500 meters north (to the left). There is a shelter there where you can wait for a combi to take you into Troncones. Last November it was M$15 to the Playa Manzanillo area of Troncones.

The time of the last combi varies by season. When I took it last April the last combi was pretty early, maybe 3:00 PM. In November it was about 4:00 PM. If you are too late for the combi, wait for a while for a taxi. I’m not sure what the taxi fare is.
