Shrimp is not caught locally and it is not something I recommend ordering when we have so much FRESH SEAFOOD. Never mind the practices used by shrimpers that kill fish, turtles and dolphins.

That is why I always order the local fresh octopus!!!!

There definitely are shrimp being maricultured in the San Blas area.

There are crawdads (crawfish, mud bugs) being maricultured in Lago Presa El Infiernillo on the way up the mountain to Patzcuaro.

There are oysters being seeded for pearls in San Carlos.

There are bound to be other critters being raised too.

"Maricultured". Interesting word, and no doubt technically and scientifically accurate. Much more palatable than, say, "shrimp farms", or "fish farms." Kinda like Albertans wanting the avoid the phrase "tar sands", preferring the more benign "oil sands".
I've been told that some (much?) of the shrimp sold here comes from shrimp farms in the Far East....Thailand or Vietnam. And that most of the shrimp caught in the Mazatlan area is exported to Japan, where it commands much higher prices. But those could just be rumours.

The two significant landing ports for shrimp in Mexico are Mazatlan and Veracruz, with the majority coming from Mazatlan. They are typically frozen on the boats.

Rob is so right that our local seafood is what should be savored when you are here, but the shrimp is good too.

Our local source for the "non local" items (a few local items too) is PKS on the way to La Noria before you get to the Pemex. Huge selection of items.

We buy shrimp at the fish market on Kyoto - Pescaderia El Dorado. They normally have white shrimp from Matzalan. Flash frozen on the boat just like all the shrimp available in Miami, etc. I haven't seen pink Gulf shrimp here. That would be quite a haul cross country in a refrigerated truck.
We're 24 hours driving from the Gulf of Mexico.
