Thanks Ray, that was a helpful response. I am thinking of getting a place at Vivo resorts (20 minutes away from PE, nice beach) versus Playa Blanca around Potosi.

I've been to both Zihuatanejo and Puerto Escondido for extended stays. I have to say that I was not impressed with much about PE, except the area known as the "Adoquin", a walkable touristy area of bars, restaurants, hotels and inns, souvenir shops, grocery stores, etc. that backs up to a portion of Playa Zicatela that reminds me of Zihua's Playa Principal. The rest of PE is spread out with a small town square just off the busy main highway that runs right down the middle of the pueblo. They have several beaches but the main two seems to be Zicatela (sandy surfers beach, with high waves and rough undertow, populated mostly by foreigners and "slackers"; and, the beautiful, secluded but smallish Playa Carazallio (sic?), which requires you to walk down hundreds of steps to get there (making leaving the beach a brutal climb back up!). Still, worth the trip.

Puerto Escondido itself has all the trappings of a small town, some banks, is more spread out than Zihuatanejo, a few nice restaurants but many more casual "open air" bistros, good transportation in and around the subdivisions (and its airport is smaller than Zihuatanejo, if memory serves), is MUCH hotter than Zihuatanejo, doesn't have the breath and spread of luxury to economy accommodations like Zihuatanejo and, most importantly (at least to me), the people aren't quite as friendly as the folks I've come across in Zihuatanejo. All of this is to say that, for me, after an extended look see at both places, I chose Zihuatanejo for my extended winter vacations. YMMV.

Does anyone have any thoughts or opinions on retiring or spending a considerable amount of time in one city versus the other as an Expat with decent Spanish? Thoughts would be appreciated.

There is a good forum for the Puerto Escondido area on tomzap.com. Choose the PE area, among the several areas Tomzap covers. I think you'll have to register to read the forum, certainly to participate on it. I know of at least two folks who purchased homes and lived in Zihua for several years, who now live in PE....one of whom was a frequent contributor to ZihuaRob's Board, and is now a frequent contributor to Tomzap's PE message board. I would provide names, but better you register for the PE board, and post your same question of Zihua vs Puerto Escondido. That should elicit some knowledgeable responses.

We spent about a month in PE 15 years ago. Quite a bit smaller than Zihua, fewer shopping/banking options. Weather is hotter than Z. Biggest beach (Zicatela) is fairly dicey for swimming, the beaches closer to town aren't "pristine" (are there any pristine beaches left...anywhere?). Fairly good size ex-pat community, a number of good restaurants. Not qualified to comment further.

Yes, PE is a very nice Sirloin steak while Zihua is a tender aged Filet mignon.

Being a wild-eyed vegetarian/vegan/raw food faddist I falter at your comparison...but I certainly enjoyed running naked free on Zipolite...
