Same here. I twice prepared the dry frozen sea scallops recommended by Janet at PKA. Both times they had a tough/rubbery texture. Maybe I need a new recipe . . .?

Maybe you should stick to fresh local seafood.

I buy my shrimp at the fish market at Plaza Kyoto. They sell large without the head and they are delicious. 280 a kilo. I have no idea where they are from.

Me, too! The store at Plaza Kyoto is convenient, clean and has a wide selection. Their salmon filets are delicious! I would like suggestions for where to purchase sea or bay scallops. I've tried PKS with no joy.

Bet they do! We are aware of a number of shrimp farms just north of Puerto Vallarta.

There is also an oyster farm that specializes in pearls in Los Mochis.

Mariculture is a big thing in Mexico, and should be.

+1 on Pekes. They even deliver. But again, call early for best results.

The charge a bit more to clean shrimp and butterfly them, well worth the $25 pesos.

Mexican shrimp is usually landed commercially at either Mazatlan or Veracruz. PKS has a nice assortment of shrimp, many from Mexico in various sizes and prices. It is frozen, most of it is frozen on the shrimp boats, so it has been handled well.

We only buy Mexican shrimp, and only frozen, at least here.

Preferred shopping day for seafood at mercado (reply)

I will be arriving on a Saturday evening. I will be wanting to buy fish and camarones for dinners for a series of meals over about five weeks.

I have heard that Monday is not a preferred day for buying fish at the mercado because the fishers don’t go out on Sunday.

I’m thinking I could do my buying on Sunday or Tuesday. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Shrimp is not a local product. You can always find fresh fish on the downtown beach, even on Monday. Just get there early.
