Any idea how close to shore the attack occurred?

According to the video of the attack that I saw, it looked like the gentleman was about 80 meters or so offshore. You could clearly hear him yell for help. It's truly gut-wrenching.

Rob is correct in his description as 2 friends of mine who saw both victims said the same, that those were shark bites and not crocs. Sadly La Vox is not always the most accurate in his reporting and that is a prime example. And I was told only Playa Quieta was closed after and no request was made to close the other beaches. Like Rob said, the mayor would not want to scare tourists and it is a nightmare to deal with.

Sharks have always been in the area but with warmer ocean temps, there may be more in the area and/or different movements of them. Still, as sad as these attacks are, it is a very rare occurrence. I have friends that spearfish every week in the area and often seen sharks and never been an issue. In this case, it is unlikely we get the truth of why it happened...

The thing is, if it was a croc that attacked the man, it would be the first time in daylight in the ocean of our region that such a thing occurred, they usually feed at night, but also, the bite marks on the woman's leg are unmistakably those of a shark, so that would mean two different animals attacked 2 people at the almost same time in the same spot.

Spent many a day walking this beach. SO ODD to have a shark attack on this sort of sheltered beach. I am shocked, and it leaves me wondering if there is not a larger shark issue in the general area.

Sometimes these ideas become accepted and then scientists come along and see if they are really true.
Two examples I can think of are the idea that women living together (such as at a college sorority) start menstruating in synchrony after a few months--numerous textbooks told us this in the 80s in 90s and it was recently refuted.
Another is that dogs and other mammals can smell with much greater sensitivity than humans. Some guy at Rutgers, McGann, asserted that this is not true, with much fanfare, but he did it in the form of a review paper, not a research paper, and I am very skeptical. I have seen what dogs are capable of with my own eyes.
Let's see if the shark mistaking the human for a seal theory will withstand the test of time.
Seems to be holding up so far.

"Bad shark." HA!

I have no idea about the nature of the shark attacks in Zihua. However, here in the colder waters of the Pacific, when there is a shark attack, it is usually someone who is wearing a dark wet suit. The shark mistakes the human for a seal or sea lion.

Shark sez, "Oh, my bad. Sorry."

The word in Zihua is exactly as Rob has it, first reports were incorrect a shark was responsible. How dare you question Rob. Either way it’s horrible news.

I don't pretend to be an expert, but photos of the woman's leg clearly show the serrated triangular teeth marks of a shark. Now while it's statistically possible, I find it hard to believe two people swimming in the same area at the same time were attacked by different creatures.

We had our regular, lovely swim this morning inside the bay. There were no signs, authority figures, or anything about the beaches being closed. We were, however, the only swimmers. Lots of paddlers.

On line search still have little to no information other than the male was 66 years old and from Belgium. Who knows if that is accurate?

Has anyone heard how the woman taken to the hospital is doing now? And, I didn't see any closure of the beaches in Zihua yesterday. I'm swimming Friday regardless.

Our flamante mayor is who allegedly said the beaches were closed. My understanding is that State authorities called for the closing only of Playa Quieta. The mayor is apparently too busy playing with Christmas decorations, posing for photos and trying to pour as much of his cement on the public dole as quickly as he can to be distracted by attending to the media nightmare and public health risk this shark attack poses. He doesn't depend on tourism to earn his living.

According to La Voz de Zihuatanejo it would appear it was a crocodile responsible for killing both the Canadian tourist (male 66) and biting another woman (Californian?) now recovering from her wounds. The attack occurred around 9:30 this morning in front of the Club Med. The man’s left leg was severely bitten and despite best efforts of first responders he bled out on the beach. Lots of speculation in other reports elsewhere about a shark attack, as well as conflicting information about the victim, but this report, given the proximity of the two attacks appears most coherent.

Not sure how you missed my post on this.
Shark Attack Kills Man

I saw the bite mark photos as soon as they were available, and I also understand a bit about shark and crocodile behavior. I know people who were on the scene almost immediately. I called it right from the git-go. Eyewitness testimony, photos and forensic analysis have simply confirmed my previous statements. Please don't continue to confuse people by citing the unprofessional reporting by media unaccustomed to practicing actual journalism.

According to health officials for Guerrero in their latest report released today, as of 3 days ago there were NO confirmed currently active cases of Covid-19 in the entire state of Guerrero, and only 71 in the entire country.

Very sad news today for the family and friends of a visiting tourist who was killed by a shark at Playa Quieta. I'm already seeing people talking about canceling their vacations. So much fear could be assuaged somewhat if the municipal government made a public statement stating clear and concrete actions they will take to protect swimmers, but I'm not confident they know how to do that. It couldn't happen at a worse moment for our local tourism industry. Fortunately locals that DO know what they're doing are searching for sharks near the coast in order to try to identify them. The city's only boat apparently is only used for photo ops, but divers and fishermen know the signs to look for, and some have the right technology to at least keep an eye out locally. Earlier this afternoon there were still people swimming in Zihuatanejo's bay when I looked, in spite of the city's claim of closing the municipio's beaches. My wife Lupita says she's not scared and will take her daily swim in the bay tomorrow as usual just like she did today.

There was a nice breeze for much of the day. The day started off mostly cloudy, but the sun peeked out from time to time and made for quite a pleasant day weather-wise. The ocean water continues cooling little by little. Last night felt cooler than the 22°C reported, but maybe it was just my imagination... running away with me...
