Mexico recognizes both US and Canadian licenses. However, if your are a permanent resident, you can't drive a foreign plated vehicle. If temporary, you can.

Hmmm. This is interesting. Didn't someone else report that they could not get a driver's license since they were not a citizen? My apologies if my memory is not serving me correctly.

Question for you all:
Do you need a Guerrero driver license if you have a Guerrero plated car? Or can you keep your US license?

Thanks in advance!

New law, not sure of the date it went into effect but I think it was Jan 1 2023. You must have residency to obtain a Drivers License and also to register you automobile. Many people had cars that were registered annually as well as drivers licenses that had renewal dates. When they went to renew either one of them in 2023, they were turned away. In 2023 there was a lot of people applying for Temp or Perm residency. "There was no mention of Required Citizenship for either"

I have a friend who is at the city offices to renew her driver's license. She has been informed that permanent residents of Mexico can no longer get a drivers license you must be a Mexican citizen. This makes no sense if you live here, and have a Mexican plated car.

I can't believe the city would do something so stupid, well, yes I can, but I still suspect something got lost in translation. The regulations for emitting a driver's license come from the state government, and these are the current rules (there is no mention of nationality, but it does mention a credencial de elector, and your migratory document should suffice for that purpose):

Augggg...

I received my Guerrero license when I was a Temporary Resident - bought for 5 years - license has since expired. I have been a Perm Res for 3 years now - living CND mainly since The Vid but, was planning on renewing this Winter when I was down there...

Yeahhhh, probably depends which day you go to the "Help Desk" at licensing... Or, I'd find a connection/friend in that Office to smooth the process..

Yeah, administration/service short comings like this when we lived down there - almost put my partner in the Nut House - not sure how far off she was to entering the threshold of the door way...

Best

Keep us posted on your process of renewal...
