WOW

Aren't you curious why "surfguy" is all for paving the waterfront when none of the other neighbors directly affected want to see this project carried out? Personally, I'm not keen on seeing La Ropa converted into a brightly lit overbuilt southern California community, but then I also don't live in a condo skyscraper on the beach, so your perspective would be interesting if you could manage more than an exclamation of "wow".

Unfortunately, I don't expect La Ropa's neighbors who oppose this project to speak up because many of them are afraid of retribution from the mayor. But I've heard from enough of them that I can speak on their behalf in general terms.

I used to live right where the mayor wants to pave and turn it into another Disneyland, and one of the most beautiful attractions of that location is the lack of light pollution and the lack of concrete that raises the ambient temperature, as folks along the waterfront here in downtown Zihuatanejo have been finding out since the Paseo was "remodeled". Just a simple little dirt road, some smoothed stones on the beach, and the bay full of life. My Activities page has examples of some of the marine life this project will jeopardize if not eliminate altogether.

This is great news for us residents at the south end of la ropa! We will hopefully also get beautiful lighting to aid in our vigilance against crime and help create a safer environment after dark!

Really? Lighting never stopped any thieves at La Ropa or anywhere else around here that I'm aware of, makes it even easier for them. Most robberies occur in broad daylight here. When I lived at La Ropa I appreciated the DARKNESS at night so I could enjoy the Milky Way and the constellations and the beauty of the NATURAL ENVIRONMENT. Not cement or bright lights. We didn't even have electricity most days when I first lived at La Ropa. So I guess next you'll want another Oxxo built closer to you? Maybe a bowling alley and a McDonalds?

Even the folks at El Viejo Capricho del Rey don't want the road paved or a walkway.

I really hope he just leaves the pedestrian streets alone. I like your last sentence: people don’t vacation in Zihuatanejo because of its painted concrete. People vacation in Zihuatanejo for the exact opposite actually - it still has an old world feel to parts of it. Not commercialized. When we have friends here for the first time - that is one of the first things they say!

This Thursday morning on the radio the mayor once again commented his intention to dig up the pedestrian streets in downtown Zihuatanejo and repave them with his cement, similar to the waterfront. I can't imagine the businesses there are thrilled about having to close while the construction is going on, not to mention that the streets are fine as they are and don't need repaving. Personally, I like the adoquín paving stones and what few remnants of old Zihuatanejo still haven't been smothered under the man's painted cement, and from what I understand many of my neighbors feel similarly. He also says he plans to start paving the road to Capricho del Rey at La Ropa and building a walkway like the one between La Madera and downtown along that stretch of road. Totally unnecessary, and endangering the fragile marine life that occupies that small stretch of undeveloped coast. Again, as far as I know, none of the neighbors want that dirt road paved nor a walkway built. Millions of pesos wasted on projects of dubious necessity just so he can milk the public budget some more. A bummer and a damned shame to continue losing what little natural space we still have along Zihuatanejo's waterfront to this greedy man's infernal cement. People don't vacation in Zihuatanejo because of its painted cement.

The arrival of foreigners has been quite noticeable this week. They fill most of the beachfront restaurants as well as the downtown sidewalks in Zihuatanejo. English and French-Canadian can be heard all over town. Welcome! Bienvenue! ¡Bienvenidos!

Our weather continues to be absolutely perfect. Not too hot in the day. Not too cool at night. Just right! Still no snow in the forecast. The current water temp is 28°C. A tad cool for locals.

Six luxurious bungalow suites with A/C, cable TV, Internet connection, kitchenettes, and garden terraces with living and dining areas. An absolutely perfect place for relaxing and losing track of time.
