Proposed train to run from Tijuana to Cabo San Lucas (reply)

I will be in Cabo in about 10 days and may use the Theodolite to do some surveying in preparation for this historic decision. I don't know how those damn things work but I hear chicks dig those guys.

Now there is a motivating factor if I ever saw one! Let us know how it goes. If all goes as planned, that might just be an investment in tooling that I would be willing to make. How much are one of those thingamabobs, anyway?

I share your skepticism. And I’m waiting to see how the Mayan Tren usage goes. Particularly the pricing.

Proposed train to run from Tijuana to Cabo San Lucas (reply)

I've read that in the days when trains were ubiquitous in Mexico, they were the cheapest form of transportation, cheaper even than buses.

Proposed train to run from Tijuana to Cabo San Lucas (reply)

One benefit it might have is to populate some of the small cities along the way. Lots of cities that were built up by being train stops in the USA deteriorated when the car replaced trains in the 50s and 60s and 70s. As it stands now there are Tijuana and Ensenada to the North and Cabo and La Paz to the South. Very little in between those two destinations despite 1600 km of beaches.
Yes, every 30 minutes is a bit idealistic but let's not get caught up in those details in the early stages.
I will be in Cabo in about 10 days and may use the Theodolite to do some surveying in preparation for this historic decision. I don't know how those damn things work but I hear chicks dig those guys.

Proposed train to run from Tijuana to Cabo San Lucas

The title of the article is, "Train Route Running From Los Cabos To Tijuana Proposed After Success Of Tren Maya." However, much of the article goes on to highlight the potential problems with the rail line. It will almost certainly cost much more than flying from Tijuana to Cabo. It will take much longer. Maybe lovers of Baja California will do the train ride once to see the countryside from the ground. However, how many would use it as their typical form of travel to southern Baja?

Proposed Train to run from Tijuana to Cabo San Lucas

The article states that the trains will run every 30 minutes. That is very hard to swallow.

Also, can we even use the words "After Success Of Tren Maya" yet? The line has just been finished and we have no idea how many tourists will use it. With my limited knowledge of rail companies and pricing, personally, I can't imagine the Tren Maya will be profitable from tourist dollars. Of course, we will see within a few years how successful -- or lack thereof -- the Tren Maya will be.
