Airlines play strange games. One day, when I was still living in Alaska, I need to make 2 reservations: 1 Anchorage to Missoula MT and 1 Anchorage to Zihua. While Zihua is twice as far from Anchorage as Missoula, ANC to ZIH was only $50.00 more than ANC to MSO. Bend over and spread 'em!

We stayed at the Worldmark for a week last year and thoroughly enjoyed it. The staff there will treat you fantastic and you will have a great time there if you haven’t stayed there before. You can walk or take a combo to town as they stop right at Worldmark. The combis are all different but you will see the correct one (stripe colour) to take and the staff can also help. Lots of good information on this board but as with anything anywhere negative is sometimes louder then positive. Enjoy your time here!!

Also…. On the cheap comment, we could have flown to Cancun for 1/2 the price of the airfare from Vancouver Canada to Zihua but we chose to come here.

I share your pain. I look at the YVR->CUN airfares and the YVR->PVR airfares. Then I feel a bit ill as I book my flights to ZIH.

A friend comes each year and gets what is now a great price. He gets the first Air Canada flight of the season (around November 1) with a return to YVR 4-6 weeks later for under C$1,000. I have paid that for a one-way fare.

As an aside, that friend bought points at an all-inclusive in Cancun. The first time he came to Troncones, maybe 2011 or 2012, he did not like it at all. He returned to Troncones in 2022 and loved it. He was back in 2023 and is ready to book his flights for 2024.

Our accommodations are mostly covered as it is a time share , however, we have no cooking facilities so in the 5 weeks there we will be contributing well over 100.000 pesos to your local restaurants liquor stores, taxis and any excursions we may book.

I don’t know the legalities of TT’s rights and obligations. My understanding is that any business that operates at the airport pays a substantial fee for the privilege. I know that is the case for the car rental companies.

In addition, a city taxi driver can pick up fares anywhere. A TT driver has to sit and wait for a plane to arrive and hope there is enough business from it that he gets a fare.

These guys are the Airport Mafia! They charge over double the cost coming the other way! They also limit the number of cabs. the last time I was there I waited almost an hour for a taxi. I doubt if they're hurting as much as the drivers in town!

They aren't a mafia by any stretch of the imagination, and it pains me to see you refer to them as such. They are folks with families just trying to put food on the table, and they're the most professional, least problematic of our transportation services, being federally licensed drivers employed by the airport to provide a safe service. Their rates are higher because (a) they mostly only drive passengers one way, i.e. from the airport to their lodging, and (b) they don't have anywhere near the amount of potential clients that local taxi drivers have: their only customers are airport arrivals, for the most part.

You make this same suggestion every time this same question is asked over and over again. It's not worth it. It is illegal for them to wait for fares there.

I spoke with a Troncones taxi driver a few weeks ago who had taken a fare to the airport. They told me that after they left the airport grounds they were flagged down by people with suitcases and surfboards. He picked up the fare. Quickly he was pulled over (he didn’t say by whom). The driver was told he was not authorized to pick up arriving passengers. The passengers were required to leave the taxi and he was required to drive away. He didn’t know how they got a ride. Maybe TT sent a vehicle.

That driver won’t try to pick up near the airport again.

Given the plethora of taxis, the costs of vehicles, the price of gasoline, etc. it must be difficult for a driver to earn a living. I understand them being rigorous about protecting their turf.
