I agree with the take on the Crocodiles I, among others, swim a couple of Kms every morning and three days in the last three weeks a smallish 2 to 2.5 meter one has been out. It is totally out of its fresh water element and is not hunting humans. Everyone should back off and give it a chance to go back into the lagoon. It will if it can be left alone. I was a scuba instructor for years and always told my students "the most dangerous creature in the water is you, not JAWS".

Thanks for sharing your point of view. Right on!

The little one you saw leaves the estero at La Ropa to search for food, usually in the lagoon across the bay. A dangerous trip with all the pangas zooming back and forth between Las Gatas and the pier. A much larger croc was recently found dead in the lagoon during the peak of the croc hysteria. Hopefully it will take up residence in the canal where the city stupidly removed two small ones that had been living safely there for years, away from the larger crocs and all the humans at La Ropa. Right now what's left of the small lagoon by the museum at Playa Principal is in poor condition. The two crocs helped keep the small body of water in better shape by helping keep the mouth of the canal open and flowing. Now it's currently closed and getting nastier by the day, worse than it's been for years.

Walked by the old site of the Johnson-Evinrude outboard motor site on Cuautemoc Street this morning. That large commercial site is being developed into a "plaza" I was told, after being left vacant and abandoned for around 20-25 years. Any idea who´s behind that project? Or can we assume it is "you-know-who"?

At the Mayor´s Thursday announcement party for this public "destruction" project, he didn´t dare to answer the question many are asking: Why do this project now, at the very peak of the tourist season? Why not wait until April, after Easter, when tourism has dropped off?

Folks aware of this "renewal project" ask: What´s wrong with the old surface? Clearly, there´s nothing wrong with it, save a few bumps and hollows. In fact the present, attractive cobblestone surface is barely 10 years old. The mayor, in his remarks yesterday, actually apologized to the former mayor, whose project the cobblestones were, for tearng it all up!

Clearly, many of the features that foreign tourists find attractive around Zihua-- be it crocs at La Ropa or the funky cobblestone walking spaces in the downtown core -- do not fit in with City Hall´s vision of transforming Zihua into just another glittering, glossy travel magazine photo op.

It's a money grab. Previous mayors would announce a project and by law locate an informative sign that had the amount budgeted and the company who won the contract bid, but to my knowledge every single public project he's been involved in even when he was Director de Desarrollo Urbano for a previous administration has been a no-bid contract automatically assigned to his construction and cement company, and always with inflated budgets. In Mexico, public budgets are always padded, no money is ever left over, and if they do go over budget there is never a penalty, so it's legal corruption to a point. But this guy takes it to the extreme, phony-smiling for the cameras the entire time.

Not only has be bought Playa Riscalillo with the money he's grifted being mayor, but he's allegedly trying to buy up the entire downtown waterfront.

But even worse is that no opposing political party points these things out because they want to do the exact same things! #PobrePueblo #MerecemosMejor

Local health authorities are reporting that 13 cases of dengue were confirmed in Zihuatanejo during January. Without any rain that number should drop in coming months.

We are expecting one of the worst water shortages ever at the same time local authorities are allowing the construction of numerous condos and tourist lodgings mostly along Playa Larga and Playa Blanca. No water. No public security. But more tourists. Oh boy! Politicians creating problems for other politicians to promise to solve (though they never do).

Our mayor Jorgito made a big affair of announcing his new money-making scheme to downtown residents of tearing up all the quaint and rustic adoquín paving stones so that he can replace them with his own cement, removing any trees that get in his way in the process, such as the big ficus trees in front of the church, and replacing them with scrawny palm trees that provide almost no shade. What a greedy ass! A public project no one asked for, totally unneeded, that only benefits him personally. Not the downtown residents. But of course, since everyone wants their discounts on their local taxes and they're afraid of retributions, no one speaks out against him to his face. But I've seen more comments against this farce than for it in the social media. I expect more people will speak up once the construction forces them to close their businesses and lose money.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE if you see a crocodile on the beach or in the bay, don't bring it to the attention of local authorities. Our incompetent local authorities will remove and kill them in their ongoing efforts to simulate doing their jobs. We like tourists who respect our wildlife. Simply abide by 3 simple rules to avoid any unwanted encounters with crocs.

1) Don't feed them.
2) Don't threaten or harass them.
3) Respect their space.

We also don't call local authorities to deal with stray dogs for the same reason: we'd rather have the dogs alive than dead.

An oasis in a garden of paradise. Comfortable rooms with privileged views, delicious food at their restaurant, extremely warm and friendly staff, and the truest ambiance of Zihuatanejo.
