I got an "international driver's license" from AAA before going to France to drive around the Loire Valley.

The rental car lady looked at it like, "isn't that cute?" before she dismissed it. There may be some benefit to having it but I sure didn't find it.

Well, yes... in that it is a meaningless piece of paper so you'd have to have an actual license from an actual government entity. AAA sells them based on paying a fee and having a photo to give them, and that is it. There is no test or other verification of any kind, and no one (police or rental car companies) actually wants to see it if you have one. At least, that was the case in Europe.

My guess is at some point in the distant past they meant something, before there were treaties to mutually respect each other's drivers licenses. And somehow they have remained in policy and legal docs even though they have zero legal meaning or significance.

Just don't even think that an international drivers licence will ever give you any added legitimacy, with or without a government issued license.

There are tall stakes with yellow ribbons on them that we assume mark the edges of the "project." They started with a vengence on Monday and the huge rocks are being dumped into the water then rearranged. Awful

Bet a lot of damage is done to the new project by summer storms.

I got one of those a few years back because I was told I needed it to rent a car in Italy. By "issue" they mean fill out a form in pen on cardstock and tape on your photo. It's a joke and the rental car place actually laughed at me when I showed them. It means nothing and they want to see your government issued license.

I'm told that in most municipalities in Mexico, residency (temp or perm) is all that's required for a license. Another Zihua "quirk".

I believe it may be worth looking into Petatlán or La Unión as sources for a driver's license. The Zihuatanejo city hall is laser focused on pouring cement and absolutely NOTHING else, to the detriment of everything else, including our tourism and our livelihoods.

BTW, that new road to Capricho del Rey will cover all the rocks along the coast with the mayor's cement. The project foreman says it will extend 20 meters into the ocean from the road's hillside. If you have Google Earth installed you can measure the distance and see how much of the coastal ecosystem will be cemented over. SICKENING! I wish more La Ropa residents would contact SEMARNAT and PROFEPA screaming ECOCIDE! There are locals who wish to remain anonymous who ARE contacting them with details about the irregularities of this project. But they need more voices to bolster them. I suspect the ayuntamiento may not even have a Manifiesto de Impacto Ambiental. I'm sure they never had a licitación pública because allegedly the mayor's cement company is on the public payroll. Corruption at its worst.

Isn't there an International Driver's License? Let me check ... there is!

Hmmm. Some sites say that you still need a driver's license from your country of citizenship. Some others say that your driver's license from your country of citizenship is not valid and you need the International Driver's License. Ah, we need a Subject Matter Expert.

I hope all you local property owners don't mind the 20% raise in property taxes that you're paying so that the mayor can pour more of his own cement for unnecessary works like the road to Capricho del Rey. The publicity alone cost a fortune. Last year the city wouldn't let non-citizen taxpaying residents participate in the raffle for a vehicle they're giving away. Let me know if they do it to you again this year. It's discrimination and you shouldn't tolerate it.

The high winds forecast a few days ago by the government still don't appear in other forecasts, but Friday and especially Saturday rain is expected. Temperatures remain perfect, though the ocean water temperature continues too cool for locals at 27.6°C. Brrrr!
