Interesting. One of Eloina's friends told me pisto means money (cash) in Guatemala. Some cafés and restaurants, she says, ask to be paid only in pisto.

slang ... pistiando is heavily drinking, pisto is the person who drinks a lot ... slang ...

I'm going to take a wild guess that the word "pisto" is a pocho word used by folks who live in the border region, and that it derives from the English word "pissed" = drunk.

Barra is the place for abalone... Lots of diving for them around there, and most of the restaurants serve them. I asked why we don't see them in Zihua often and was told because they all get eaten in Barra.

Still available at PKS fairly regularly. They are small, and we were concerned about that so did our research on the fishery. Abalone do great here, have a huge population and we don't feel at all guilty about eating them.

One smack with a wooden mallet and saute gently in garlic butter, or just marinate them and eat them raw!

Desperately seeking crab dishes in Zihua (reply)

Greetings, Fellow Zihua Lovers! After having exhausted all feeble online attempts at finding a restaurant in Zihuatanejo that serves crab, I come humbly asking if anyone is familiar with any restaurants in Zihuatanejo that have crab dishes. Also, do any pescadores offer crabbing outings. The reason I ask is that I will have my brother in tow on this visit to my favorite place in the Universe and he is a very picky eater. We already have Lety's on the agenda for coconut shrimp. It is not easy to find the menu for restaurants unless you allow yourself to have a Faceplant account which is something that will not happen in this household.

Also, other than what I have read on this forum, I have no knowledge of boat tours in Zihua other than the occasional lancha trip back from Las Gatas when I am too tired to make the hike back to La Ropa. I get seasick in a bathtub. My brother, on the other hand, likes to go crabbing. One time, in Barra de Potosi, I witnessed many locals with nets at the mouth of the lagoon. Hundreds of crabs, mostly very small, were literally floating toward the ocean at various depths. The locals were scooping them up with their nets. It was kinda' surreal. I didn't ask but I figured that the crabs were going to be the main features of that night's meals. They were kinda' small so you would have to work pretty hard just to get a mouthful or two of crab meat.

Looking so forward to seeing Zihua again soon. Please do something about the cold water before we get there, okay? Thanks.

P.S. I immediately thought of La Jaiba Feliz but it appears that they don't have crab on the menu. Kinda' bizarre, huh?

Honestly, living here, periodically we see little tiny, maybe 2 to 3 inch (sorry Rob) crabs available on the street. That is about it. Crabs aren't a thing here.

If you have cooking facilities, go to PKS and see what they have. This is a fish place, you can buy other things, but crab isn't really a thing.

Maybe see if there is an online menu for El Tiburon.

Wish we could help....
