Ahhhh ignorance. Here in Montana USA we often get in the way of bears. And grizzlies, well, largest predator in N. America so things don’t bode well. Our politicians want to hunt them, developers want their habitat, tourists, well, they want a picture. Poor crocs, give them room. Let them screw…err…mate.

Is Rio Ixtapa the foliage that comes off the golf course and enters the sea between it and Pacifica? If not, where is it?

Río Ixtapa empties into the sea at the northern end of Playa Linda, in front of Isla Ixtapa. The mouth of the river is a huge lagoon where there have always been cocodrilos, yet it's been several decades since anyone as stupid as this boy and his family managed to get themselves attacked there. Excuse my callousness, but their ignorance is unfortunately causing a great deal of problems for cocodrilos who simply seek a peaceful place to live and who aren't at fault here.

It's too bad this local government does not handle these situations better. Actually, having a population of crocs that are harmless for the most part and easy to see could be a bonus for tourism. Some ecotourism tours could be given about them with some education on the do's and don'ts instead of the fear-mongering. Lots of missed opportunities for the Zihua-Ixtapa area for this kind of tourism!

Precisely. And killing the two small crocs that lived in the canal by the museum instead of simply putting signage there is a perfect example of just such a missed opportunity. Tourists marveled at seeing them there. A photo of them is a thousand times more interesting than photos of painted cement letters, unless you're a cement company owner.

An 11-year old child was stupidly allowed to play in the mouth of Río Ixtapa by his parents at the Trailer Park when he was attacked this Monday evening by a crocodile. It's currently their mating and nesting season, so that is likely a factor. The child suffered a few scratches on his head but fortunately nothing serious, same with his parents who rescued him. It never ceases to astound me that visitors are apparently unaware that crocodiles live here, but even more so that the local government year after year does EVERYTHING wrong when it comes to handling and managing our local crocodile population. There needs to be VISIBLE SIGNAGE announcing their presence along with alerts for strong fines for violating any of 3 basic rules:
1. Don't feed crocodiles.
2. Don't harass crocodiles.
3. Respect their space, especially during mating and nesting season.

Unfortunately, pouring cement and cutting down trees appears to be all our local government knows how to do. This is likely to at least make national news, so expect another round of crocodile hysteria and stupid responses by the municipal government. Actually, they've already started.

The marea roja continues to increase along our coast. Parts of Zihuatanejo Bay were quite dark red today while the water remained clear in other parts. If it continues growing and gaining toxicity, we should expect to see some dead marine creatures on the beaches, but so far I haven't seen any. There's only a strong fishy smell at the moment, but no smell of dead fish.

This Tuesday the coast of Guerrero comes under a warning for a mar de fondo event where waves pushing massive amounts of water are expected to reach a height of almost 3 meters. Expect some coastal erosion and riptides.
