Maybe Zihuatanajo has different Blue Flag rules.

"No music at the beach" is the rule here. Blue Flag rules are the antithesis of what Zihuatanejo has always been. Zihuatanejo pretending to be something we're not is going exactly as I predicted it would over 2 decades ago. Blue Flag isn't about ecology or sustainability, it's simply typical snooty European guidelines for selling travel packages, and in our case, an excuse to pay political favors. If we cared about the healthy ecology of our beaches we'd instead follow the guidelines for Playa Platino and let people enjoy beaches again.

The Blue Flag criteria do not specify exact decibel limits or methods for measuring noise levels on beaches. However, there are guidelines related to managing noise to prevent conflicts between different beach activities:
Criterion 30 states there must be management of different users and activities on the beach to prevent conflicts and accidents. This includes zoning for different activities like swimming, surfing, and motorized water sports.
Consideration must be given to potential noise impact from various activities like motorized activities and stereos. If special events like playing music prevent compliance with any criteria, the Blue Flag must be temporarily withdrawn.
The code of conduct displayed on Blue Flag beaches should reflect appropriate laws governing beach use, which could include local noise ordinances.
So while there are no mandated noise measurement methods, Blue Flag beaches are required to have management plans and zoning in place to control noise levels from different activities and prevent disruptions to other beach users. Excessively loud noise that causes conflicts between beach activities would violate the criteria, even if specific decibel limits are not provided

Los Panchos (reply)

Without checking Wikipedia, I'm curious about Los Panchos. As a group, they've been around for many decades. There must have been many personnel changes over the years. Are they still performing as THE REAL Los Panchos, or have other groups sprung up, claiming to be the real thing....like the Platters in the US?

When we were in Cuba last October, one of the bartenders had dozens of Los Panchos numbers on his smartphone.

None of the original Los Panchos are around anymore, but as with almost all the old famous tríos there is no shortage of replacements and offspring who keep a good thing going. However, the recording I put is from the originals. They are considered as the main trío most responsible for making popular the music genre known as el bolero.

We enjoyed a refreshing late afternoon rain this Monday, and we expect more rain tonight. The rains have been so light that they haven't really affected the bay except for the trash that washed into the bay with the first rain the other night. The water remains surprisingly clear for this date.

Apparently there was a huge shootout in the small village of El Zarco near Los Achotes about an hour ago, so expect to hear news of this during the course of Tuesday as it gets sorted out. A reminder why, as residents of the downtown waterfront area of Zihuatanejo, we are extremely grateful for the presence of the Marinos who are at the Cancha from early morning until late at night as well as at their nearby naval base near the pier. They were who kept the peace when I first lived here 50 years ago, and once again the job falls to them due to the ineptitude and greed of the municipal government who spends most of the municipal budget on buying cement from the mayor's cement company instead of public safety such as security cameras and professionalized municipal police personnel. Imagine if even a tenth of the budget were spent on public safety how much better off Zihuatanejo could be. #PobrePueblo #MerecemosMejor

The waterfront was practically empty this evening as my wife and I strolled to the pier and back. Very few visitors are around, though there were some folks on the beach and in the water who looked like they were enjoying themselves. One couple had their music playing at a decent level (something forbidden on Blue Flag beaches except for restaurants), and we couldn't help but dance and enjoy it along with them as we walked by.

The Mexican resorts on the Caribbean and the Golfo de México are having a rough time from the torrential rains associated with the system that's also bringing rain to us. It looks like it will move into the Golfo de México where it could form quite a powerful storm over the hot water. Something else to keep an eye on.
