Sinking Boat in Zihua Bay (reply)

We paddled over it this morning. Someone put a red and white flag on the rigging between the masts so no one runs into it. Fortunately, at least as of this morning, there are no fluids coming to the surface.

Sunken Sailboat (reply)

For years now there has been a sailboat from Oregon with the USA flag on it anchored near Playa Las Gatas. My husband and I just watched it sink into the bay this morning. I can only see the very top of the mast sticking out. Heartbreaking for the owner of the boat I’m sure. Curious how they will deal with that now that it has sunk, especially with the top of the boat still sticking out. Definitely a hazard.

It turns out the sailboat broke free from its anchor overnight, probably damaged its hull drifting over rocks, and I believe it was being towed towards the beach when it sank.

Sinking Boat in Zihua Bay (reply)

The guy is ok! I’m so sorry I didn’t mention that before!!! He’s actually been diving down and retrieving items from his boat for a while now.

So we woke up at 7:30am and the sailboat, The Liberty, was actually over in that small cove directly across from Playa Las Gatas. Then we noticed that it was being towed back to its normal spot by another boat. It was definitely already sinking at that point so we weren’t sure why he was coming back out to his spot. Anyway, then he left the boat for a while and came back with scuba equipment. I think he was trying to fix the problem, but after about an hour or two it sank. He’s been retrieving items ever since.

Sinking Boat in Zihua Bay (reply)

We didn't paddle this morning, so didn't see anything.

As much as we bitched about him never going out to dump his tanks, this was not the answer we were looking for. Hopefully he got off of the boat. He had an inflatable dinghy.

Boat name is Liberty.

I wondered what happened. From across the bay I noticed it was missing this morning, but I didn't look close enough to see the mast. Bummer.

I suppose it now belongs to whoever wants to salvage it.
