There is talk of having a makeshift terminal for busses in the Troncones area to bring in tourists for the day.

The bus tourism allows the politicians to claim inflated numbers of tourists and to take credit for something that isn't true. Our numbers have gone up in Zihuatanejo with the bus tourists, but the truth is most of them don't make any unnecessary purchases, and they certainly don't buy handmade dresses and shirts that cost thousands of pesos like our tourists used to do. Some make purchases at local shops, and we're grateful to them, but counting warm bodies to simply claim increased tourism is a very misleading trick politicians like to use to try to take credit for them when the real income perceived by locals from tourism continues to plummet. Our daily sales in Zihuatanejo are nowhere near where they were prior to all the violence that mostly began here around 25 years ago or even 15 years ago when the beaches started getting certified and families with pets felt they were no longer welcome. We continue losing the high-spending tourists because of the changes in Zihuatanejo trying to imitate Acapulco, Vallarta, Miami Beach, Los Cabos and Mazatlan. Now we're just another cookie cut from the same mold, and too many of our tourists don't really care where they are as long as there's booze and beaches, a huge difference from the tourists we used to get who came because Zihuatanejo wasn't like those other places. All-inclusive continues cheapening our local economy and hurting the locally owned lodgings the same way all the Oxxos are killing off the locally owned convenience stores. A damn shame to see such a gem such as Zihuatanejo get tarnished and cheapened by short-sighted greedy politicians and speculative investors sucking our cash cow dry.

Troncones appears to be next as I read last week there is a plan to increase tourism in that area by building hotels and improving the roads to capture those driving by en route to Zihautanejo.

Yes, I tried warning them years ago when they were getting the government involved to build their road. Careful what you ask for. The government never does anything without getting something in return. Since then all kinds of crooked politicians have been laundering their ill-gotten gains buying, building and selling there. What good is having the ability to predict the future when no one pays attention to you? I moved here from Florida 35 years ago, and I saw the writing on the wall back then. People now in Florida are screaming "WE'RE FULL! DON'T MOVE HERE!" to all the snowbirds and folks from other places. Here in Guerrero, Acapulco is totally full and fairly trashed. And now the politicians want to do the same thing here to Zihuatanejo and the entire coast. First the politicians foment land invasions to get voters who will let them do whatever they want and heap accolades on them in the process (good for publicity) while they're destroying the place enriching themselves. There's got to be a better way to move forward.

I recently visited and thought the improved downtown streets looked great. Hoping they do something similar with the walkway at capricio del rey. The progress there looks beautiful with the same curved style walls they put in at principal. They installed many palm trees too which will look great if they do the same landscape lighting they have at principal.

We'll just have to agree to disagree. The little beach may not have been your favorite, but it didn't deserve to be buried under tons of rocks and boulders, and neither did the marine ecosystem 20 meters from the shoreline along that entire stretch from La Gaviota to CAPRICHO del Rey. That's known as ECOCIDE in my book. Altering the coastline is supposed to be against the law, which is why I'm convinced the project doesn't have a Manifiesto de Impacto Ambiental (a document required by law).

And the lighting on the downtown walkway is simply LIGHT POLLUTION. Especially detrimental to nesting and hatching sea turtles.

For folks who didn't like the old dirt path (that the rest of us have loved for decades), compressed gravel or macadam would've sufficed without having to kill the mangrove trees (protected by federal law) or the dozens of other old shade-providing trees that were unceremoniously (and probably illegally) removed from there. The palm trees don't provide anywhere near the same amount of shade, and their use is actually just another money-making scam for the politicians involved. So now it will be a hot walk most of the day, particularly at the end of the day and well into the evening (and to hell with the wildlife, right?), even worse than the downtown waterfront where we simply don't walk during most of the daytime for lack of shade and suffocating heat.

Such a shame to see people coming here who DON'T appreciate our natural beauty and want us to look like Miami Beach. With all due respect, such people belong in Manzanillo, Vallarta, Cancún, Acapulco or Los Cabos. Places the people of Zihuatanejo have always hoped we would never imitate.

The Gobernadora de Guerrero comes to town this Wednesday morning to inaugurate (and collect her percentage of the take?) for the so-called remodeling of the downtown pedestrian streets; i.e., ripping up the perfectly good and sturdy adoquín paving stones and replacing them with small colored cubes of the mayor's cement. I hope she knows not to wear high heels because they get stuck in the new paving stones.

At 30°C, the ocean water temperature is about bathtub warm. Perfect for those of us who live here, but possibly a bit warm for folks from cooler climes. Visitors to the downtown beach appeared to be in ecstasy. I imagine it was the same at other beaches. Except the small beach the city government buried under rocks next to Capricho del Rey. If you haven't done so already, please voice your displeasure over what has occurred there. It's very easy, you can do so in English if you like, and you can remain anonymous.

Downtown has been getting somewhat spruced up for the visit by the Gobernadora as well as for the summer vacation season which starts this week. They ripped the old twinkling lights off the amate tree in front of Plaza del Artista and tacked new colored lights onto it. I don't know why this municipal government feels it has to abuse trees so much, but the current mayor has been known for killing trees since he held his first public post under a different municipal administration for his very first job he destroyed all the beautiful trees at Plaza Kioto. Maybe it's because I was born in the horse country of Kentucky surrounded by beautiful forests of tall trees, but I've always had a great appreciation and respect for trees. Planted a few hundred of them when I worked as a landscaper in Florida and I was proud of each one.

A comfortable vacation lodging located a block from the beach in Colonia La Madera and near many excellent restaurants. Enjoy your vacation in this 2-bedroom condo with a spacious living/dining area and a balcony overlooking a garden and pool.
