Airport colectivo (reply)

Flew in from Mexico City last evening. Asked for two passengers for the colectivo to Zihua. I can't recall for sure what the rate showed, but I believe it was 240 pesos/person. I was charged 475 pesos, (thinking I'd saved 5 pesos), given the ticket and told to ask for "....." outside. A taxi driver answered, and he took us to Centro.
None of the rates match the ones shown on Rob's chart for Airport Ground Transportation, either the colectivo or the taxi rate. I have no idea why we got a taxi, when we requested the colectivo....or why the rate I paid was lower than the posted rate for a taxi, (and, I think, slightly cheaper than the posted rate for the colectivo).

... less times to the ATM less chances.

Agreed. Fewer trips to the ATM is a good strategy. If you can score a Mexican bank account, that is ideal. No fees! I was lucky to score a Bancomer (now BBVA) account before they tightened the restrictions. Also, if you open a bank account at Schwab, they will refund your ATM fees world-wide. Very cool! The least costly ATM fees seem to be at Inbursa Bank downtown across from Los Braseros.

I'm a petite woman and I agree. Stay low key and practice situational awareness.

Plus:

I carry a reusable shopping bag over my shoulder. Never a purse.
I wear a moneybelt underneath my clothes.
At the ATM after getting my dinero, I quickly lift up my shirt, unzip moneybelt, insert pesos, rezip moneybelt, and go.
I don't count the pesos after getting them from the ATM.

If I am going to be in town then yes only about $3,000 pesos but I think it is much more convenient to grab as much as I can when I go get cash rather then keep going back to the ATM , more times to the ATM increase chances of being ripped off, less times to the ATM less chances. No I’m knows what I get and I and more cautious when in an ATM run. I believe I have decent situational awareness and as my oldest says I am continually on the look out for impending doom as in todays world you never know

This is wise advice. Yet walking around with MXN$20,000 pesos (US$1,000 Jan 2025) is still something that should be avoided, in my humble opinion. Personally, I don't like to carry around more than about MXN$2,000 pesos (US$100 Jan 2025).

Didn't withdraw directly from my canadian bank in a while, can't say for ATM.
We now transfer an amount with XE to our Mexican bank account when the exchange rate seems good 3-4 times during the year. Then we get cash from our Mexican bank. No fees.
But I still do purchases directly on Canadian credit card when going to grocery or some restaurants.
Example this day : Mid market rate is 14.36MXN/1CAD this afternoon.
I paid carniceria Santino with my Canadian Master card and the rate was 14,16MXN.
But considering that I get between 1.5 and 3% bonus on my purchase, 3% in this case, it gave me a 14.60MXN/1CAD, better than the mid market...
Of course you've got to pay your credit card in full each month, not letting the 18-22% run on it....

Peso to the Canadian $...... and the airport colectivo (reply)

Used the Banorte ATM yesterday on Benito Juarez….. it let me get 20,000 pesos…… declined the first offered exchange rate….. plus the 58 peso fee….. checked bank today and it looks like it was 13.73 peso to the Canadian Dollar. Much different then the XE app of 14.35 but never expected to get their rate at an ATM

I got 13.8 yesterday, and again today, at Scotiabank. xe.com posts the mid-market rate. Over the years, I've found that Scotiabank will give me between 2.5 and 3% LESS than the current xe.com rate. 13.73 is quite a bite, but my 13.8 is only a tad less painful.

On another matter, we arrived yesterday, expecting to take the airport colectivo, as we have for the last 20+ years, but were surprised to be told that colectivo passengers are limited to 1 suitcase each. We had 2 each, as we always do. So, it was a 475 peso taxi instead of the 380 peso colectivo. No big deal, but it sure smells like a sop to the taxistas.

Does anyone know what the rate of the Canadian Dollar is to the peso at the ATM?

Go to the search engine of your choice and type "canadian dollar to mexican peso" and it should be fairly close to what is reported. The anks normally give you a good rate exchange. However, of the bank asked if you want their rate of exchange, decline. They may call it a convenience or dynamic rate. It will almost certainly be awful.

The amounts shown on-line are usually the "mid-range rate" and are higher than you'll get at a local ATM. Years of dealing with the Zihua Scotiabank tells me you'll get between 2.75 to 3.0% LESS than the current rate shown on, for example, xe.com

So if xe.com is showing 14.25 pesos for the Canadian $, expect to get around 13.8

And yes, never accept the rate offered by the ATM.
