The changes between busy and calm areas in Zihuatanejo fascinated me when I visited the place recently. You understand perfectly how quiet Zihuatanejo's mornings become since frigate birds create a peaceful atmosphere during their flight activities. During my visit I found the museum closed and I hope the establishment will soon reopen its doors to the public. The area of town needs to experience a revival to become active again.

The museum provides a good chronological history of the region. I had the place to myself the first time I went through it. I'll have to say the most surprising exhibit was the rather extensive collection of carved phalluses.

I agree the museum should be open, but our area of downtown already gets quite lively, which you'll see if you read some of my earlier "ZIH" postings. We just had a very lively Fandango Cultural, and every Friday evening there's the very traditional Danzón dancing in Plaza del Artista, every Saturday morning the Eco-Tianguis "Sanka" across the street from the museum, every Saturday evening an art show in Plaza del Artista, and every Sunday there's a large cultural event at La Cancha aka the basketball court.

When I was 14 I worked on a tour boat that took tourists snorkeling in the reef at the Buck Island National Park in St. Croix, USVI. While the larger 65' vessel took the tourists back to Christiansted Harbor to drop them off and pick up another boatload, I remained aboard a smaller 26' glass-bottom boat that we towed over with all the San Miguel beer I could drink. After cleaning the 6 large panes of glass for the next trip, I had some free time to enjoy, and when I wasn't swimming around visiting friends on other boats, I'd often just kick back and watch the frigates hover off the end of the island without flapping their wings for what seemed like an eternity. It was then that I really learned to appreciate their amazing flying skills.

Even though the morning was cool and quite beautiful, there weren't that many people out enjoying it. Mostly locals and a few extranjeros. Not many fishermen went out Sunday night, so the fishermen's area was mostly empty this Monday morning, as usual. Apparently our national visitors spent the morning packing up for their long drive home. And the road was well backed up for hours trying to get to the Autopista Siglo XXI. While there were still some beachgoers on the downtown beach during the day, it was a light day tourist-wise, relatively speaking. The water taxis finished early and the pier was mostly empty this evening when we strolled by. I didn't see many fishermen preparing to go out.

We're expecting the cruise ship MS The World this Wednesday. It will be here for a couple of days. Hopefully its residents will do some local shopping, though the ship's residents typically don't behave like the more touristy cruise ships. But they've always been good visitors, from what I recall. So don't be alarmed when a massive cruise ship shows up.

The small waves continue in the bay, though I haven't seen them posing a problem for swimmers.

There were dozens of frigate birds riding updrafts over the bay this morning. Many more than usual. The poor pelicans trying to fish the schools of fish in the bay were noticeably nervous since almost every time one caught a fish the huge frigates would swoop down upon them trying to steal their meal. Quite a spectacle for those paying attention!
