Please cross your fingers for me. The water was gross.

Una Lluvia ReZIHa - Eventos Culturales (reply)

The parking lot at the pier has been emptied of cars and has a huge stage set up with tables, chairs, etc. Workers there said it was going to be a three-day event.

There was a long line of folks in traditional Ballet Folklórico costumes walking by the Agua Pura water store Thursday evening. They are visiting from elsewhere. One said that there will be two events today, Friday, June 6, 2025, both at 5 pm. One will be at the Cancha and the other will be at the Panteón. (Two events at the same time at different places? Maybe they will swap places tomorrow?)

Anybody have any more detailed intel?

Yes, it was a mess. I was sitting on La Ropa and could see the line of debris heading down the beach before finally washing ashore. Definitly not the day to be swimming in the bay.

What had me scratching my head is why the beach cleaning lady was raking up all the organic matter instead of focusing on the tons of plastic/trash. It took her an hour to clean up a few yards of beach because she was bagging up everything, branches, cocos, leaves..Get the nasty plastics and cans off the beach first, worry about the other stuff later.

Downtown Zihuatanejo finally got a real thunderstorm early this Thursday morning around sunrise. Unfortunately, it opened up the bocana to La Boquita Canal, and the pestilent water and thousands of plastic bottles and other trash it had been holding for weeks finally went into the bay. My wife even called and pled with city officials to attend to this problem weeks ago when there was plenty of time to act. Nothing. Nada. Zip. This is where we separate a real city government from the posers. Not only would a caring and serious city government have cleaned up the canal and prevented that mess from entering the bay, but after today's rain it would've posted no swimming signs on all the beaches in the bay after having failed to do so. Of course, Zihuatanejo's municipal government did no such thing, and a few hours later when the sun came out, there were visitors swimming in the hazardous waters of the bay with no idea of the danger to their health. The amount of plastic alone was disgusting. Until the municipal government fines people for littering, they will continue littering. And for a town where trash is collected daily, sometimes multiple times, there remains an amazing amount of refuse able to enter our bay with each and every rain. Obviously we're doing something wrong, but even more obvious is the lack of action by the municipal authorities including Salud, Seguridad Pública, Servicios Públicos, and CAPAZ; all of whom have overlapping responsibilities that could address these problems. But the town's leadership appears to be only concerned with pouring cement and public image. And the lack of real leadership is notable. All hat and no cattle. A damn shame.

Speaking of image, there was a lovely cultural event along the waterfront this evening, but there weren't hardly any visitors or anyone else to appreciate it. When we took our evening stroll, the mayor walked right past us apparently oblivious to the fact that there was almost no audience for what was quite a lovely cultural event. I'm glad she enjoyed herself, but such events really should coincide with a larger audience of visitors as well as more publicity to attract folks from the region. Otherwise, it simply costs the city more money to hold the event than is realized in local sales, which doesn't seem to be a very responsible way to spend our tax pesos. But neither I nor my wife are campaigning for any public office, so what could I know?

The mar de fondo event predicted for today still hasn't manifested itself. It's apparently running on Mexican time.

I spoke to one of the Danzón dancers, and she assured me they would be in Plaza del Artista this coming Wednesday at sunset.

An inviting place that will leave you wanting more of what they have to offer: a luxury bed and breakfast boutique hotel in a private villa overlooking La Ropa Beach with only 4 suites, a restaurant and a unique pool bar lounge offering a panoramic view of Zihuatanejo Bay and its beaches. They also have a two gourmet open-air restaurants that will transport you to a magical place full of temptations.
