Zihuatanejo was mostly unaffected by Huracán Erick except for the rain. Some places like Las Pozas, Los Achotes, Los Almendros and other low-lying areas had some flooding, and the road between Zihuatanejo and Acapulco is currently flooded at Los Almendros and in Técpan. The hurricane hit the Costa Chica of Guerrero and the border with Oaxaca hard. I expect entire communities will be cut off for days if not weeks, especially the region of Guerrero known as La Montaña. The region around Cuajinicuilapa and Pinotepa Nacional seemed to take the brunt of the hurricane, and our hearts go out to the community there as they try to pick up the pieces of their lives.

Expect the rain to continue for the next couple of days. Then get ready for the next big storm that will inevitably come within the next couple of weeks, if history is any guide. Usually around the end of June or beginning of July we get a big storm that rakes along our coast, but then the rains generally stop for most of July and into August and it just gets hot, a period we call La Canícula. So enjoy the refreshing rains while they last.

I have to admit I was shocked to hear the sound of suitcases being hauled across the street in front of our home this morning by a crowd of people who arrived by bus. What kind of tourists take a vacation to a place expecting to be hit by a hurricane? Yet there they were during the rain today playing on the beach and even swimming in the dirty water. Pobrecitos.
