Loved the new NLU airport last year. Primera Plus bus from the house at 8 am and arriving by 10 am without having to take the 430 am bus all the way to Mexico City from San Juan del Rio, Queretaro. Not many passengers the day I left to fly over for the Cano's fishing tournament but it is a spectacular setup and I'm sure once they get more ways to get there will take off.

Limitations on Mexican Flights (reply)

Why do they use $ for both currencies, just asking for trouble.

By “both currencies” do you mean “three currencies”?

C$, M$, US$

Or maybe more…

Dollar is the name of more than 25 currencies. The United States dollar, named after the international currency known as the Spanish dollar, was established in 1792 and is the first so named that still survives. Others include the Australian dollar, Brunei dollar, Canadian dollar, Eastern Caribbean dollar, Hong Kong dollar, Jamaican dollar, Liberian dollar, Namibian dollar, New Taiwan dollar, New Zealand dollar, Singapore dollar, Trinidad and Tobago Dollar, and several others. The symbol for most of those currencies is the dollar sign $; the same symbol is used by many countries using peso currencies.

Why do they use $ for both currencies, just asking for trouble.

They both stole the $ sign from Mexico.

Rob is correct. However, the origins of how and why and when are all very murky. Some say that the original U.S. dollar sign was a superimposition of U and S. Some say that the U.S. dollar sign was written with two vertical lines to differentiate it from the peso. There are various other theories.

Limitations on Mexican Flights (reply)

Two years ago a friend brought me an Applr TV. Unfortunately I hadn’t given him the receipt for it. He ended up paying more to aduana than I had paid for the ATM.

Last year I made a point of giving my friend all of the receipts for items he was bringing me. All of the receipts were in Canadian dollars. I wrote an itemized list of the items; a column of the C$ price; the currency exchange rate; and the US$ equivalent.

The result was something like C$675 = US$490. So he was under the US$500 limit.

The aduana officer looked only at the C$ numbers and treated them as US$ figures. They were insistent that my friend owed duty on US$175.

Sigh.

At least arguing with them didn’t get him sent to a gulag as might have happened in a more authoritarian country. Instead, a supervisor came over.

It was the same person who had charged the exorbitant duty on the ATV. They recognized my friend, greeted him, didn’t look at the receipts, and waived my friend through.

I have not experienced the customs extortionists for 2 years now. It did get to the point that they were going through everything even with a green light. They were wanting to change importation tax on my wife’s jewelry that she bought in Mexico. Is anyone still having issues?

... no uber ...

I used Felipe Angeles for the first time in June 2025. I was able to use Uber to get to the new airport. I don't know if you can contact an Uber to come pick you up.

Of course, if you fly direct from Houston, Dallas or Phoenix, then you are at the mercy of customs extortionists in ZIH.

That is why you should fly to San Diego instead. Then spend a few days in the San Diego / Tijuana / Rosarito / Valle de Guadalupe Valley region and fly directly from Tijuana to Zihua. No customs! Send me an email if you are looking for things to do in our neck of the woods.

Limitations on Mexican Flights (reply)

16 Billion spent on the canceled new airport that was 5km away from Benito Juarez. Now it's under water. Nobody wants to use the military airport, Felipe Angeles, that is 50km away with no trains, no highways, no uber, no planning. Of course, if you fly direct from Houston, Dallas or Phoenix, then you are at the mercy of customs extortionists in ZIH.

Felipe Angeles airport is not failed. We flew through there in March to Guadalajara from Ixtapa. It was a pleasant experience and would not hesitate to use it again. Clean, not crowded and flights were on time. It seems as Mexico has moved most of the Viva Aerobus domestic operations there and we saw plenty of Cargo planes.

Also taking flights through Mexico City this year has seemed to alleviate congestion.

Sure it's not built up around the new airport. But it will be at some point. I think this is a huge plus for Mexico City's operations.

It has been getting more and more difficult to travel to/from Zihua. Now it looks like it could be getting even more difficult. We are permanent residents but travel to/from the US a few times each year to see family, etc. We usually travel Aeromexico and Delta from ZIH-MEX-MSP, so I am concerned about how this may impact our future travel.

The U.S. dictatorship doesn't want its citizens flying into Mexico so that they'll spend their tourist dollars funding concentration camps for brown-skinned people and dissidents in the USA. The orange-faced pedophile lied to everyone the other day claiming Mexicans live terrified of the cartels and that our politicians fear going to work every day. Nothing could be further from the truth. He's projecting the fear of the USA's own spineless Congressional RePUKElicans who have abdicated all their powers to the orange-faced pedophile.
