Hotels at LAX aren’t terribly expensive. Many accept pets. We don’t travel with pets but always overnight in LAX. (We actually could do it in a single day, but it would mean getting up around 3 AM to do it) We use our Hilton points so our stay is free.

How do you deal with the LAX layover? Staying at an airport hotel that will accept a dog each way appears to me to be a significant financial price to not use MEX and the overnight each way seems to ge a significant delay.

Dig deeper. It is better to be disappointed now when it is possible to make other arrangements rather than later…

Pets are not accepted in checked baggage at any time (year-round) for flights to/from Huatulco, Ixtapa/Zihuatenejo and Merida

Pets are not accepted from May 15 to October 31 for flights to/from all other locations in Mexico

Mexico City is not included on the AVIH permanent and seasonal restrictions, pets are accepted.

https://www.westjet.com/en-ca/pets#id-91CBBC96F97DE622CE6B5727A9270CA8-tab-1

Airlines may have a maximum number of pets in hold as well as a maximum number of pets in cabin, by seat class. For this reason I reserve my flights as early as is practical.

Thanks LG....Westjet may have loosened their policy...what follows is something I just copied and pasted......................Yes, WestJet allows dogs on their flights in both the cabin and as checked baggage, with specific guidelines and restrictions. Small dogs and cats can travel in the cabin on most domestic and international flights, provided they meet size and kennel requirements and are booked at least 48 hours in advance. Larger dogs and other accepted pets can travel as checked baggage in a kennel, again subject to size and other restrictions.

A friend of mine from Vancouver BC flies to Zihuantanejo every year and drives to her home in Lazaro Cardenas. She has been a dog owner for about four years. She is under the impression she has to go through Mexico City to import her pet? Thanks everyone and see you soon Rob for number 10

Mexico doesn’t require her to fly through MEX, but she might have to go through MEX anyway.

I bring my dog with me from YVR to ZIH three times each year. I have been unable to find any airline that will fly us without going through MEX. WestJet was my favorite flying YVR-ZIH when I could take my cat in the cabin, but WS won’t take an animal in hold.

A friend has been getting non-stop YVR-ZIH Air Canada flights in recent years, but AC won’t take an animal in hold.

Alaska Airlines used to be a good flight, but AS has made YVR-LAX-ZIH impractical by requiring an overnight stay in each direction. In addition, the US has complicated ZIH-LAX-YVR by requiring screwworm certification.

My dog and I have been flying AeroMexico every time for almost three years now. The layovers at MEX are constantly changing. If the dog is travelling in hold southbound requires at least four hours for the connection. It would be easier if the dog were in cabin. Northbound doesn’t require any particular connection time because my dog is always checked through to YVR.
