A little after 10 p.m. Sunday night the lights went out in downtown Zihuatanejo for over 2 hours. You'd think it would be newsworthy enough for one of our local newspapers to report it, but not. Not a peep. Eventually technicians from CFE came to the transformer in Plaza del Artista where they managed to get the lights back on for everyone in our neighborhood, but each time they tried to turn on the lamps in the plaza, the lights went back out. So for now the plaza remains in darkness except for the illumination from our home's perimeter lights. Personally I prefer it this way. The city's illumination is like carnival lighting and way too bright. So for over two hours old-timers like us got to remember what it was like decades ago, using hand-held fans to keep cool or swinging in a hammock to simulate the movement of air, because there was NO breeze of any kind, and the temp was around 30°C with high humidity.

But much to our surprise a big wind kicked up during the wee hours, lightning flashed and thunder boomed, and a brief but heavy rain fell that brought the temperature down to around 24°C or so, quite comfortable. A bit of early morning cloud cover once again helped the overnight coolness to linger until the sun finally broke through around 8 a.m.

There were hardly any visitors around today, and many businesses didn't even bother to open. The waterfront was mostly empty this evening.

If you can, now is an excellent time to visit Petatlán for the celebration of the anniversary of the "Iglesia de Tata Chuy", which is this coming Wednesday, though the celebration has already started. A very festive time to be in Petatlán to enjoy some of our local and regional culture.
