Tropical Storm Ivo barely brought us any rain. Barely enough to water the plants. And it sucked all the precipitation along with it. We'll be lucky to see any rain for the next several days other than the odd late afternoon or evening shower. We'll take anything we can get because we need the rain!

The morning started cloudy again but the clouds moved off and it turned into another picture-postcard-perfect day! The downtown beach filled up rather quickly, and folks enjoyed getting battered by the waves generated from the passing storms. There were more people downtown and at the beach today, but unfortunately it didn't seem to translate into more business for local merchants. Sales were sluggish, if there were any at all, and waterfront restaurants sat mostly empty most of the day.

The federal government's Secretaria de Turismo along with Guerrero's counterpart was here today as well as out at Troncones. In an interview she gave I didn't hear anything that seemed positive. She wants more "playas certificadas", more mass tourism promotion by travel agents (they're the ones who are sending people to All-Included hotels in Ixtapa and busloads of people with no money to spend) and more "diversificación de oferta turística". None of which we need or find helpful. We need to diversify our ECONOMY, not our tourism offerings. We need to deal with PUBLIC SAFETY, not run more people off our beaches for traveling with their pets, as more and more people are doing. And Troncones, I've warned before that they should be very careful what they wish for because they just might get it. They wanted attention from the government, and almost immediately sleazy politicians and their cohorts in money laundering began building condo and luxury home projects in the area. The kind of "progress" that actually runs off the type of tourism the people in Troncones (and I) have worked so hard to attract over the years. Soon locals will find they can't afford to live there themselves. I've seen this movie before, and it doesn't have a happy ending except for developers and sleazy unscrupulous politicians.

I still believe word-of-mouth is our best publicity along with TARGETED ADVERTISING, not MASS ADVERTISING. I trust all of my readers to do more good for our community than mass marketing. We're counting on you!
