The Voices of Moderation (reply)

The progressives now say that sea level rising by up to 2 feet over the next 100 years is a catastrophe but sea level was over 100 feet lower just 15,000 years ago. I hope that the voices of moderation will win out.

Who are “the voices of moderation”?

What do “the voices of moderation” say? That anthropogenic global warming is real or not real? That this global warming will benefit humanity or adversely affect it? That we should let humanity’s greenhouse gas emissions continue to increase year after year? Or that we should take steps to decrease GHG emissions and remove environmental CO2?

Is there a problem that requires solving? And if so, what actions contribute to the necessary solution?

I asked a question of you days ago regarding your solutions and as of yet I have seen no solutions offered only denial and right wing platitudes and talking points. What are your solutions? I guess you don't need solutions when you'd rather bury your head in the sand than believe what science is telling you. Of course, the new right-wing (I wont call it conservative because it certainly isn't) mantra is less education is better. Let's keep everyone as ignorant as possible while the oligarchs rob the rest of us blind.

posting here or anyplace else for that matter is perhaps self aggrandizing at most. Contributing, money, time, effort etc to actual organizations can help.

Totally agree with the assertion that the best form of action is the contribution of money, time, and effort, etc. to actual organization that are helping. Disagree that dialogue is a total waste of time. The trick is to do your best not to have the conversation devolve into a tit for tat, "I'm right. You're wrong." It ain't easy. As my Dear Sweet Mother used to say, "There are two sides to every story. Yours and the shithead's."

The real problem is the denial of facts that are staring us in the face. It amazes me how so many individuals swallow massive lies without question, totally unencumbered by any thought processes.

"Everyone is entitled to his own opinion, but not his own facts." -- Various forms of this quote are attributed to various individuals

Very good, was wondering if you catch that in 1900 very little early warning which contributed to high death total. Point is very bady huricanes have been a very very long time.

I don’t know but my guess world wide over the last 20 years trillions maybe 10 or more due to all the subsidies, back door requirements, and lost growth that results in more poor and working poor. With all this money spent not sure what impacts it has had and no analysis was what works well and what is not very effective. Maybe you're knowledgeable of this but it seems to me we just keep throwing money at all without focusing on were the money is best spent and don't have any information on what progress we made. Seems like basic information is need.

All we get is deier predictions that seem to me their main purpose is to scare and as i said above many predictions aren't good.

Boy i hate typing on my phone. I know you all are getting tired of me asking these questions but it seems some on the left take whatever is dished out.

What is it, a good number of the people live on less tha $10 a day. If they had these policies a large number of people in Africa would starve. Why in California if you don't make $40k per year you may have to live in your car or worst

The worst hurricane in us history was the 1900 Galveston with 8k to 12k dead follow by the 1899 one with 3,400.

Sorry if this is not smooth text since on on the road and using the very small cell screen. Thanks for not just doing a left wing rant.

1. Not sure how you extrapolated that assumption from my comment. Climate change events don't care about one's politics. I agree that we probably are past the point of no return.
2. If you sincerely believe that human life and property are simply collateral damage and you will not be impacted, okey dokey.
3. When the Galveston hurricane happened in 1900, the city manager told the residents that the seawall would hold back the storm surge. They did not evacuate. The Galveston tragedy led to the founding of the National Weather Service. Hurricane models have improved over the past 125 years.
4. Bless your heart.

We all spending many of trillions of $ per and not having much impact.

Well not trillions yet but it might well get there. But that's spread out across the planet and many years. And a relative pittance compared to the estimated costs of doing nothing.

There was a time when conservatives believed in the concept of insurance - being prudent as Poppy Bush would say. And that's what mitigation is here, a form of insurance. The overwhelming consensus of climatologists could be wrong, though the evidence gets stronger every year. But what if they're right? They seem to be very sure of themselves, with all their charts and graphs and data - fake news in your bizarro universe. But if they're right, and given that the endgame would be catastrophic, it might be prudent to try to mitigate the problem now while it's still relatively affordable and not too late. Putting your head in the sand is not an option. That's what Poppy would say.

Green energy is a'comin' whether you like it or not, even if all this climate-change stuff is hokey. It's simply a more intelligent option. The only question is if it will get here in time to save us all, or will Luddites delay and obstruct and slow-walk it until it's too late. With Trump and his minions I fear the latter.

When Hurricane Helene hovered over North Carolina and 250 people were killed, when 137 Texans, including dozens of children at summer camp, drowned in flash floods last month, and 440 people died in California wildfires earlier this year, the climate change impacts of those events killed without regard for their political leanings, right, left or center.

USA/Canada has cleaned up its act. China will most likely change as well, just so far, they have not.

And other parts of the world have yet to go through their most polluting stage of development. Much more the reason for the USA to take the lead and try to atone for its cultural sins of overindulgence.

The USA contains around 4.4% of the world's population, yet it consumes 16% of the world's resources. Only Qatar consumes more resources per person than the USA. The USA remains the largest user of petroleum per day. It already did the coal and the wood-burning part where most cities lived with blackened skies during much of the year. Since China has roughly 3 times the population of the USA, it's consumption of resources per person is notably less than that of the USA thanks to its ever-increasing policies of efficiency. They know they're at their limit and that their economic development is currently unsustainable. The USA also knows that, but is now intentionally heading in the wrong direction, undoing much of the hard-won progress of the past 40 years in favor of the oligarchs and the corporations currently running the country.

Climate Change (reply)

Many of the responses to my comments were expected since a large number of users of this site have left of far-left leaning.

Many times worst-case climate predictions are played as likely or fact by the press or likes to liven up articles to attract eye-balls and by politicians who want to scare voters into voting for them. They tend to feed the climate dogma with many predictions turn out to be wrong:

It seems that some people can’t see the forest for the trees. Perhaps more awkwardly but more accurately they can’t see the missing sections of the rainforest because they can’t see the missing trees.

If you tell someone they need to study five hours a week or they will fail the course, but they study only three hours a week and get 51%, it doesn’t mean you were an incorrect alarmist. It means you were correct and their corrective actions reduced the disaster, but they will still not be getting into university. Some countries have taken some actions against global warming, but so much more action is needed.

Some people also think that there is only one tipping point. In fact, there are multiple tipping points some of which we have already passed. Others we have yet to pass.

For example, glaciers are retreating all over the world. That is a tipping point that has been passed. The coral reefs are dying because of the acidification of the ocean water as it absorbs more of the carbon dioxide that is produced by petroleum dependent countries and industries. Island nations are planning for their own elimination because of global warming.

How to leave a sinking nation: Tuvalu’s dreams of dry land

The fact that you have not been killed yet as a consequence of climate change does not mean that others have not died. The fact that your home is habitable with air conditioning doesn’t mean that people can continue to live where there forebears have for generations.

H.L. Mencken said, “It is difficult to get a man to understand something, when his salary depends upon his not understanding it!”. It is also the case that for many, it is easy to maintain an expensive lifestyle today if the next generation is going to pay for it.
