Sailfish (reply)

I was always under the impression sailfish were a game fish only and even ‘confirmed’ this through a few internet searches, albeit in Ingles. I was told by a local Centro beachfront restaurant - I cannot remember which - that their tacos were sailfish. Having read many books on the violent history of Mexico and Guerrero (including a biography of Lucio Cabañas) I am not surprised at low level law breaking. Whenever the ban on smoking in unlicensed places is mentioned I always point out that decapitating mayors is also illegal but the Governments in question (municipal/state/federal) in Morelia and Michoacán did not enforce that law.

This Tuesday we awoke to another warm and humid morning. A slight breeze from the sierra helped, but not much. This is the time of year when it's important to stay hydrated and drink lots of water. The heat quickly crept up to 36°C today under a cloudless sky. There is no rain in our forecast. Just more heat and more cement to make it feel even hotter.

The destruction of the port captain's building began today. Totally unnecessary. Totally shameful. Totally against the wishes of most of the Zihuatanejo community.

Very few visitors were in town today. A few merchants enjoyed minimal sales, but most restaurants sat empty most of the day. It's sad to watch the employees waiting for clients who never come.

One thing I couldn't help but notice passing by the fishermen's area was all the sailfish they were selling. It's supposed to be illegal to commercialize what is considered a sport fish, but not only is this Guerrero where the long arm of the law just doesn't seem to reach, this is Zihuatanejo where the law has never existed except as an illusion. Another reason it boggles the mind to see so many people move here who barely speak the language and who really don't know anything about Guerrero or this region of the Costa Grande.

Yesterday we commemorated the 59th anniversary of the Masacre de Atoyac de Álvarez where state judiciales gunned down innocent parents protesting against arbitrary demands by a school's director against poor families in what was part of the Guerra Sucia which gave rise to some of Guerrero's most respected contemporary revolutionaries including Lucio Cabañas, who was later murdered under orders of the state's governor Rubén Figueróa, one of Guerrero's most despised caciques who remains very representative of the state's PRI party. Years ago a PRI mayor actually had the gall to name our main plaza after him, but the plaque was quickly removed and eventually the plaza was renamed after the PRI lost the municipal elections for the first time. There is so much that many of our new residents will never know about Guerrero and our community, and that's a shame because it continues to be very much a part of our identity today.

The first with three apartments, the second with four. They can be rented all together or individually, each beautifully decorated with Mexican handcrafts, and they share a pool and Jazuzzi. One and two bedrooms, some with sofa beds. All with full kitchens, living area, balconies, and shared access to a garden with BBQ facilities as well as the rooftop terrace. (click to enlarge photo)
