large waves (reply)

Possibly Kelvin Waves?

Yes. That's why I mentioned this effect in my comments. At our latitude, they represent a shifting of water from the east Pacific to the west due to the effects of the extreme El Niño we're currently experiencing. Not necessarily visible waves. So they would explain our current oscillation of extreme tides that, combined with the effects of groundswells and storms, are eating up our coast and beaches.

We've been affected more by Tropical Storm (now Hurricane) Rachel even though it passed by much farther offshore than we were by Hurricane Polo. Stronger winds. More rain. The port's been closed longer. A real bummer for fishermen and tourists. Tuesday night there were intermittent gusting winds and rain. Great sleeping weather. The temperature this Wednesday has been extremely mild all day even though the sun came out for most of the morning before it clouded up and rained again. We were able to enjoy a stroll this evening, though the low dark clouds looked like they could let loose at any moment. From what I could see from the beach, it looked like the newly planted trees at the silly new hill at the pier's entrance blew down. But the mud was so bad we didn't bother walking to the pier. Still muddy. Still no lights. Still insulting to its daily users. And the mayor's husband announced he'll run for mayor again. They act like a dynasty.

We have another area of potential storm activity forming up again to our south. Let's hope it doesn't get any closer than the last two.

Tides will be extreme for the next 4 or 5 days. El Niño is causing the water to rise on our side of the Pacific. The storms, the groundswells, the Kelvin wave effect, and El Niño are all converging to cause quite a lot of damage all up and down the Pacific Coast this hurricane season. Much of what is being lost along the coast is unlikely to return or be repairable.

And just like that, it's October. Time sure flies when you're having fun!

Six luxurious bungalow suites with A/C, cable TV, Internet connection, kitchenettes, and garden terraces with living and dining areas. An absolutely perfect place for relaxing and losing track of time.
