It should be a "level playing (paying) field whether it is AK or Z! Lets face it> a hotdog cart isn't valued nearly what your digs are in AK or Z and should be taxed accordingly! Don't know about AK or Z, but in WI, ANY piece of equipment that produces money is assessed a value that is taxed as "personal property". > Except farmers> They're equipment is non-taxable> even though they can depreciate it out? Dunno, see if it makes any sense to you?

Daniel's Porto di Mare (reply)

Rob,
Any review on Daniel's new Porto di Mare? Was Augastine kissing the girls and Artollio still making the best Margaritas in Zih.

Daniel's Porto di Mare is absolutely terrific! The workers like their new boss and it shows and it makes a world of difference in the service.

It is also a terrific spot to people watch!

I only had a limonada and the special meal they prepared for everyone for their inauguración, but the limonada was perfect! Not too sweet. My wife said the same thing about her naranjada. The homemade tuna pastry that started off the meal just melted in my mouth. The Pescado a la Veracruzana was so good I accused them of stealing y wife's recipe. And the pasta side dish was spot on and so creamy with (I believe) ricotta cheese that I immediately felt guilty eating it.

They were doing a brisk business and the service was simply perfect. I hope they survive this season and become another permanent fixture on our waterfront.

Seems to me that with those vendors selling right there in front of the basketball court that they could be brought about to pay their taxes. And in front of the police area should have been easier. If they were not paying there then it should not matter where they are. The problem is the same. I just know that for the ambiance of Zihua on Sunday night...on the Zocolo was the best place IMO.

And as far as not happy with any vendor not paying taxes...that all sort of goes along with the problems we have here. Some people pay and some don't. If it is you paying the bill for someone else no one is happy about that. (Not using the word meaning Rob) Just in general.

I don't mind tax exemptions for folks barely getting by, and I have nothing against ambulantes, but when they are allowed to sell products sold in stores literally right in front of where they work then it is not right and it is not fair and it hurts the local economy and the community.

The problem is sistemic, just like the hillside invasions, and really anything remotely related to applying the law. The only "tax" many ambulantes pay is the bribe money to the city officials in Reglamentos in order to operate. As long as "public service" in Guerrero is seen as a license to steal nothing will change and we will imitate every mistake made in Acapulco. How I hope I'm wrong.

The other night while Lupita and I were on our way to Daniel's new Porto di Mare for their inauguración, we noticed a new feature at the cancha municipal. Kids big and small are gonna love this!

There was also a cultural event going on, and dancers of all sorts were getting ready for their big moment. First some tlacololeros (and maybe a few tlacololeras) with huge sombreros made of cempasúchil await their cue.

Meanwhile other dancers used the kiosko to prepare themselves for their presentation.

Something else that has changed at the Zócalo is all the food vendors and artesans are back in the plaza itself instead of in the parking lot where they've been these past few years. If only we could get some new shade trees and seating back in the Zócalo...
