Just tried them! (reply)

The man on the quad just stopped outside of our gate to talk to and feed the workers. After reading the above, I went out and bought a tray of 5 pescadillas for 20p and some ceviche for the same. Really liked them both!
He wanted to know who on the beach I had heard about him from, and was thrilled that I had read about him on the computer!

only the fish is fried , the batter is the thing (reply)

I guess my writing could have been clearer as I meant to exclude pescadillas as what the OP seeks while including them as one more fine fish option . I buy my pescadillas from the lady with the umbrella at the end of the bus route on La Ropa and tacos de carne as well . One stop shopping @ three for 25 pesos , just up from the fresh oyster man . I also bought some fine tiritas and ceviche from the the old guy with the cooler on his quad in that neighbourhood and mixed them on crusty bun sanwiches to soak up the juice with avocado and portabello mushrooms , with all ingredientes being so cheap and so fresh . The old guy even picked around the chiles for me for a tourist version of tiritas . I wanted to tell him it was a pussy/wussy version but wasn't sure of the slang and possible misconceptions .

Fish Tacos (reply)

If you are in Trancones, Inn at Manzanillo Bay serves Baja style tacos.

I had them and they were perhaps the best fish tacos I have ever had anywhere. Of course, we were having lunch with Wil and Belem who manages the restaurant. She was so charming and the place is so perfect, the great company and ambience may have had an influence. But great people aside, I really think they were the best fish tacos I've had.

We don't recall any pescadilla we've had having "battered fish" - just chopped-up fish mixed in with a little cilantro and some pico de gallo, wrapped in a tortilla and deep-fried.

only the fish is fried , the batter is the thing (reply)

The fish tacos at Braseros are very good but use a bread crumb type batter . Baja style tacos have more of a chile relleno type batter but a bit thicker. I wouldn't say it is tradional Mexican fare but they have been available in Puerto Vallarta for a decade near the informal downtown fish market .

Pescadillas are also good but the whole taco , shell and all ,is fried and not just the battered fish .

We've tried lots of fish tacos in Zihua , ahumado and panco battered and even al ajo but it's the sweetish batter , like a beer batter ,that is the star of the popular Baja style treats . There is often a shrimp version but the fish being less expensive to begin with is usually a larger portion and so more tasty batter to enjoy . The ones below are monster versions with crema or mayonesa underneath and shredded cabbage would be a more typical topping .

If someone knows a restauranteur that would like to improve their business and already makes chile rellenos and a fish dish and has a fryer tell them to get a big sign and buy some more chairs . A high visibility place like the old/new Arcadia would work well .

There was some talk of a need for diversification and too many people doing the same thing in town . This seemed to be true in the mercado as well with five stands of ladies all selling almost identical goods by appearance including Chile rellenos and a fresh fish venue right across the aisle for steady supply . Those smaller operators would not even have to stock the fish . They could walk over and get some from the fishmonger and pay him when they get paid .

I had heard that someone on the outside area surrounding the mercado might offer Baja style tacos but we didn't get into town in the daytime with a very short trip to check . I had fish somewhere every day or night , all good .

Interesting Rob! I have not been to this place in a few years as I always have considered it as a tourist place although I do realize many locals go there and frankly I do go to quite a few places frequented by tourists but the last time I looked at their menus, it seemed to me it was a very gringo oriented menu...I will have to try these tacos next time I'm in...

By far the best fish tacos in town that I like so much because they only use freshly caught fish with your choice of dark fish meat or white meat marinated to perfection and cooked slow to keep all of those wonderful flavors and aromas intact. They also use recently harvested tomatoes, onions, avocado, cilantro and a choice of green or red cabbage sliced thin and perfect accompanied with a sauce that is not too hot, but perfect for these tacos in a perfectly round handmade tortillas...

What we Southern California types think of as a Fish Taco, Baja Style, is a nice piece of fish, battered and put on two corn tortillas with a little cabbage, onion and cilantro and mayo, is not what is served here.
The tacos here vary in styles, but are all wonderful! Variety is the spice of life!
